The people Osnos writes about run the gamut from a public figure like Lin Yifu (the World Bank economist who defected to mainland China from Taiwan in 1979) to an obscure figure like Michael Zhang, a young energetic optimist whom Osnos first meets at a Crazy English conference and then follows for a few years. Over 20 years ago, I traveled regularly to China to work mostly as a reporter/researcher on business. In the mid-90s, with the economy humming and giant new Chinese companies emerging, most citizens seemed to have struck a bargain: so long as their lives were improving, they were more or less content to look away from politics. The Tiananmen Square movement and its bloody aftermath went unmentioned or were hushed up; the authoritarian regime remained intact and heavy. Now, according to Evan Osnos in his brilliant look at early 21C China, that equation is changing.Osnos breaks the book into 3 sections. First, there is "chasing fortune", which is about the new ambitions and new rich. When I was there, people did not want to stand out as individuals much, but most of them seemed hopeful that things were improving, in a kind of Chinese version of the American dream. Now, tiny sections of society have become immensely rich, spawning all manner of corruption and inequality. This is very fun for the coverage of the aspirations of the young and the stories of some who made it big, including entrepreneurs, bureaucrats, nationalist bloggers, and writers.Second, there is the search for "truth". This is about those who are pushing against the system, challenging it overtly over the internet as well as by legal action. Osnos' coverage ranges from dissidents to investigative journalists and activists. To his credit, Osnos sought out a wide array of people, getting to know many of them personally and following their careers as the book progressed. Their trials and tribulations can be very difficult and painful, as in the efforts to break the performance artist and architect Ai Weiwei. But there is also a journalist who instinctually knows just how far she should push things, often getting warnings and even brief periods of detention. I was astonished to learn that 1 in 100 people in China is engaged in some form of state-sponsored information control, either as censorship or surveillance or covert counter-agitprop. Though the regime is holding on, no one seems to believe in its ideology anymore; many even doubt its competence. (I.e. the popular view in the circles I wrote in - that an authoritarian regime is superior because it can make decisions quickly and with few people involved - appears to stupidly over-estimate its accomplishments.)Finally, there is the section on "faith", exploring the meaning in their lives, be it religious, ideological, or political. This follows the evolution of characters we've gotten to know. What struck me was the feeling that growth and opportunity were stalling, that the combination of official opaqueness and frustrated ambitions were swelling into what could become an immense challenge to the party if it seeks to maintain its monopoly on power. In other words, the old bargain is in dire need of renewal, perhaps in the form of new freedoms and even the emergence of new parties, particularly if economic growth is slowing. This was the thing that had most changed since I explored corporate boardrooms, met with talented workers, and taught writing at Beida. It is a potential sea change that no one should under-estimate.Osnos' book is one of the best recent ones I have read on China. It is mostly about the period he was there, 2005-2013, which saw the rise of the internet and social networking (his portrayal of their impact under the heavy hand of the sate is nuanced and surprising). As such, it is a snapshot and should be read now, as it will no doubt be over-taken by events in the near future. Beyond his first rate reporting, Osnos is a beautiful writer. It was a great update for me, an old hand China watcher. Recommended with enthusiasm.

This book goes beyond typical tourist guides and provides me with the perspective that I need to enjoy my upcoming trip to its fullest!

A fun read leading up to first trip to Charleston. Good to supplement with a map and a more-touristy guidebook or Internet research.

This is an enjoyable, surprising book about Charleston - it is more about the city, its people, food and history and a little less a guide for tourists. There are recommendations, but not in the format of "cheap eats" or "where to take the kids" like a run of the mill guide would give you - so you might additionally want to check one of those out if you're heading to Charleston for the first time. But this book helps to perpetuate your love of Charleston even if you're not there. There are text reprints of documents and menus from the 1800's, simple recipes that were mere sketches, and samplings of literature relating to Charleston.I was especially touched to reach the end of the book, and find tributes to each person who lost their life in the shooting at the Emmanuel AME church.

Beautiful painted illustrations and unique guide to Charleston. lent my copy to my sister when she was planning a trip to the town and she loved it so much she bought one herself! Fun to see such a cool guide written about this great southern city, ever since going to school in Savannah I've loved the area. Can't wait to go back with the guide in hand.

This is a small book that packs a huge punch when traveling. Background on the neighborhoods, insight into the history of the city, as well as tips on some lesser known destinations. Highly recommended.

I really LOVED this book! So much great insight and a very quick read for those looking to get started with the AIP. Plus, I love all the other tips outside of dietary changes. Too many protocols focus solely on diet and completely ignore stress, exercise, sleep and other factors that contribute to inflammation and weight gain.The only critique I do have is that it recommended for men to increase their calorie intake depending on their size without making the same suggestion for women and men to do the same depending on their activity level. I see that as a missed opportunity to have an informed conversation about why some people would require more calories than others.

It is a priceless book on Win32 API! It obviously lacks lots of new features appeared since the time of publishing (almost 20 years ago!); it doesn’t even touch MFC or any other popular programming tool (if you are interested in it); it is written in plain old C (no classes, etc.); but it explains all the basics of Windows programming, all principal Windows elements and how they work together. The language is very good; the samples are simple and thoughtful. And they work even now! I’ve got executables from the original CD that comes with the book: built in 1998, both Debug and Release versions, and they run like a snap – amazing! The CD also contains a help file that covers the whole book – pretty handy, considering the thickness and weight of the hardcopy.

About 2 years ago, I read this book and learned much more than I had previously about traditional Microsoft Windows API GUI programs. Most of my professional experience with programming languages consisted of 11 years with C#. Some of the concepts in the book were not new to me like message pumps and the general way they work under Microsoft Windows. The deep details of message pumps and how they work were new to me and this book went far to teach me the ground level concepts needed to properly set up a visual desktop program under Microsoft Windows using the native Windows API.When I examined how these things are done in other platforms, I was surprised to find that they are sometimes done the same way. If you are using something like .NET, Windows Runtime, or Java Swing, you might not ever encounter these things. However, if your software is defined in a native implementation language, perhaps for the purposes of incorporating DirectX or OpenGL at a native level, you might see such things more often. A book like this make a huge difference in successfully grasping the concepts you need to apply in order to better use such things.

I'm a firmware engineer, and spent a lot of time with RTOS device driver / app programming in C. This book so far is the best book that I've ever bought to program in desktop environment.This book explains Windows application programming using simple C programming (and it's still working for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 Desktop app using free Visual Studio Express 2013. I heard you could still use it for Metro programming as well). The code examples are built up gradually from simple to difficult. The explanation is brief but to the point (I can always get the exact details from MSDN). It's enjoyable book to read (specially who likes to read source code, rather than long detail explanation on how each API works). Jargon free, plain English book, perfect for beginners after passing their C programming =)In term of comparison, I couldn't even find other book that explains WIN32 from the bottom layer. Most books focus in middle layer functionality (.NET, XAML, etc).

He starts out talking about the basics and then slowly moves into more advanced topics.As always it's important to know what a book is NOT. This book is not a tutorial for writing windows applications, nor does it discuss MFC or most of the common methods used today for rapidly producing computer programs. This is not REALLY a reference book on win32 either.Instead it provides a tutorial-style documentation for the monstrous win32 API at its most fundamental levels. This book sets the standard for all other code written for any modern version of windows. It addresses real world issues and real world solutions to those problems (such as the chapter dedicated to making unicode friendly programs), as well as some historical issues (the difference between wParam and lParam).No manual is without its flaws. This book is a bit too braod spectrum in the detail levels. There are places in the book where he will delve into details that you could care less about, and there are points that he will put in two or three sentences and assume you understand, although you may not.Despite this, this book is essential to everyone writing code for Microsoft Windows (ANY version). You needn't read it cover to cover, but readiny section I (about 1/3 of the book) is essential. My one wish is that this book came in three volumes, if you haul it between home and school/office it gets to be buronsome. That's about all I can really complain about with this book.

This book covers just about everything a programmer needs to know to write software to run under the Windows operating system. From basic GUI design and operation to more advanced topics like using DLL's and doing advanced graphics, it's all there. The only problem is that it was written in 1998, and some of the methods the author used no longer work with later versions of Visual Studio. A little effort may be needed to adapt the sample programs to work. It would really be nice if newer edition was available. I will still use these techniques, however, now that I can see how to program without having to use the CLI/CLR or C#.

Charles Petzold's "Programing Windows", Fifth Edition is of the first rank, on par with Tom Swan's "Mastering Borland C++ 4.5", which I also have. While Petzold's book was written using Microsoft's Visual C++ 6.0, Swan's was written, as its title implies, using Borland's C++ 4.5, which I have and use as my Windows Programming "bible".Charles Petzold's "Programming Windows" is highly recommended for those programming Windows with Visual C++.N.C. Freitas

This is a great reference for programmers who want to move away from console programming. It is very comprehensive and covers a lot of ground. Everything from scroll bars and keyboard/mouse input to graphics, mutimedia files and mutithreading are discussed in detail. All of the source code is on the accompanying CD and the author's website so you can customize the programs instead of having to start from scratch.

Love this the analogies and how the bring understanding to the content being learned. Using it on a tablet is AWESOME for studying because you can simply touch and highlight all key points for quick study reference which saves A TON of the time normally spent writing notes or flash cards. A nurse saw me watching YouTube videos and taking notes while in the hospital with my son who was getting a minor procedure and recommended this book. I'm saving SOOO much from the time it was taking to write notes.

I taught Allied Health and I've taken many AP courses. I truly wish I could've taken a live course with this instructor. If the way he writes is any indication of his abilities as an instructor, there must've been a waiting list for his class.If you need in depth micro photos, this may not be your book. If you want to understand a concept, this definitely is your text.

Bruce Forciea is an excellent instructor. I actually had him for anatomy and advanced anatomy and physiology. This book is a lot of what we learned in the class and it can be used as a quick reference. Great for nursing students and new nurses for quick reference.

This is an easy to read guide to the big picture of anatomy. It allows you to grasp how all things work together so the little details have context. There is just enough humor to keep the reading enjoyable.I expect to be returning to this often.

As a nursing student who has had two semesters of study with the author, I fully endorse this product. He has a way of bringing the content of anatomy and physiology to a simple, yet complete level of understanding. The bonus is he adds a bit of cheesy humor as well which makes the learning process a whole lot more enjoyable, and quite honestly-relatable!

This book really takes what is important to Anatomy & Physiology students and breaks it down in a way that simplifies the learning process. As a former student of the author, I was amazed at how well I learned this subject matter with this material - especially the difficult physiology aspect. I have the kindle version of this book on my phone and have already used it many times in my Advanced EMT transition class that I am currently taking. It is a great reference to have at my fingertips and I highly recommend this book.

I love this book. It was just like having my professor speaking and saying exactly in the same details what A&P is about.

Awesome read and relatable stories. Great for those TTC over 35. I wish I had this book when I was going through infertility treatment.
