As a true fan of the Greek Village series, I couldn't wait to begin reading the latest edition, A Handful of Pebbles. And I wasn't disappointed! Sara Alexi has a way of creating characters that are very human and flawed but so appealing as they enter a period of metamorphosis when visiting the Greek Village. The Village has a magical quality - it brings out the best in good people and occasionally the worst in some, particularly those who are bound by rigid ideas of what is proper. I love revisiting favourite old characters with the knowledge of what they have been through. And the vivid descriptions of goats and cats, birds and even insects no doubt will be contributing to Greek tourism numbers for years to come. I loved being taken on the journey with main character Sarah as she confronts the hollowness of her married life, a marriage founded on very wrong reasons. A woman who has been living in a sleep-walking state, going through the motions of life, just may find the courage she needs once the spell of the Greek Village envelopes her.

As always, from the very beginning I get lost in Sarah's story. I fell in love with Greece with her first book. I love that when you are reading along that all of a sudden a character from one of the other books pops in like an old friend. I will not tell you about the story for fear of spoiling it for you. I wondered if this time the author took some of the story line from my life. That is how good she is at relating to and being sensitive to how people feel. You will grow to love and not love these people who we find here and in our own lives. Look forward to the next book as I always do. As soon as the hard copy comes out I will be sending it to my granddaughter as I always do. That is another plus. It is a story for all ages.P.S. Reading them in order is not necessary but if you can then do so.

I had to force myself to finish this book. Even though I knew where it was going, I wanted to see if, perhaps, it had some redeeming quality in the ending. It's absolutely fine if you are interested in minute details and ongoing descriptions of scenery. But the bottom line was, I didn't really like the main character. We deal with a suicide attempt that's more or less glossed over and not mentioned again. A best friend, who is not in any way a best friend. And, no matter how much you might truly come to dislike someone, the thoughts of actually taking a shotgun and blowing his head off!?? And those dark thoughts are just passed right by. C'mon....she's a shallow woman, and apparently, has always been one! I won't be reading any sequel in the future.

The story of Sarah's awakening to the truth of her life says so much about how we manage to live with disappointments in our own lives. And then something happens. She meets a shepherd whose simple wisdom intrigues her, and Sarah realizes that she is not living a full and meaningful life. What should she do? Sarah faces some difficult choices. Make huge changes in her life that allow her to move forward, or leave things as they are?Sara Alexi is a master at making us see and feel what her characters are all about. This is another wonderful story about the Greek village we have come to love. I highly recommend this book!

This review is of “A Handful of Pebbles”, book 7 in the “Greek Village” series by Sara Alexi. The Story: So far, a couple, Sarah Quayle, a homemaker and her husband, Laurence, a commercial pilot, have come to Greece for the wedding of one of their sons, Finn, to his fiance, Helena Plusiopoulous; their other son, Joss, is married to a woman, Pru, who Sarah derisively refers to as “Pruella De Ville”. Sarah and Laurence are staying with his cousin, Neville, and his wife and Sarah’s friend, Liz. Sarah isn’t happy with Laurence, and that fact comes into more stark focus now that her sons’ are adults and distancing themselves from her.As the book continues, Sarah starts to face the facts about her marriage that she didn’t want to acknowledge, and it’s not pretty. Among the things she finds is a shocking revelation about the death of her former boyfriend, Torin, who died in a motorcycle accident. The book ends with Sarah making decisions that will change her life. For the better? We don’t get the answer to that as the book ends somewhat on a cliffhanger.Upside: The book’s center is Sarah Quayle, who is in every scene. She is a strong, complex woman dealing with a variety of feelings and issues, most of which she has kept buried for decades that are coming to light with her trip to Greece. Sarah is a woman hurt by her past, unsure of her present and conflicted about her future. Her growth is the subject of the book. I never felt as though I was reading a book; Ms. Alexi’s writing made me feel as though I was watching the lives of Sarah and the other characters in the book. Ms. Alexi’s writing style is vivid and evocative, making her readers feel that they are in Greece and experiencing everything the characters are.Downside: Sarah is the only fully formed character in the book. I understand this is women’s fiction, and the story is about Sarah, but given that her actions affect other people-and theirs affect her-it would have been nice to hear the characters in their own thoughts and voices away from her.Sex: None. There is only one kissing scene in the entire book. This is nearly a “clean” book.Violence: As mentioned earlier, Sarah’s former boyfriend, Torin, dies in a motorcycle accident. His injuries are described rather graphically by Sarah toward the end of the book. At one point, Sarah debates whether or not to shoot Laurence; she doesn’t do so.Bottom Line: “A Handful of Pebbles” is not a flawless book. What is does, however, it does very well.

For any who delights and is confounded by the structure and functions (or lack of) of large organizations this book is a delightful read, the first two thirds of it anyway. The authors have done extensive research to come up with their eight points that according to them are indicative of an organization's long term success and health (some of them sound repetitive and start to tire toward the end).It is interesting to note that many of the great companies of the time of the first publication for this book in the mid eighties - HP, IBM, Digital, TI, etc - are either struggling to remain relevant or are not to be found anywhere anymore. This is not to say that the recommendations in the book are not meaningful but it does point out the complexity and the unpredictability of the world in which organizations operate. It does, however, is indicative of the book's failure at noting and addressing the requisites for sustaining a culture of excellence through the market demands, changing leadership, large expanse of time, and disappearing founders, which often leads to value corrosion - the root of all cultural sickness. One of the most critical aspects of good leadership is the passing of the baton, developing other leaders who can take the torch forward while deeply understanding and upholding the values on which an organization succeeds. Both HP and IBM have severely suffered since the loss of their founding fathers. In spite of having good leaders come and go they no longer carry the glean with which they once used to shine. One other area where I found this work lacking was that it never touched upon in detail on what it considers as "excellence". One could construe from the writings that to the authors excellence is about a work culture where people naturally feel empowered and motivated, organization's output is innovative and ever fresh, and financial results are strong. To me these are results of excellence but not excellence itself.I have often asked myself about excellence, it's presence and its absence, and how do we know when we are in presence of excellence and how to tell when we are witness to sloppiness. Excellence shines of its own accord. It is hard to put a definition around excellence. It is almost a spiritual quality, which is hard to confine in a definition but easier to express in what it is not or how it expresses itself. To me excellence is beauty, it is the bringer of delight, desirable yet unexpected, it exudes a pride of craftsmanship, it is skill in action, it is the WoW! factor, it makes the ordinary seem extraordinary, it is love, passion, pride, quality, and competence manifested. Excellence above all is an expression of genuine care.

Tom Peters is one of the most influential business writers of the last 20 years, and this was his initial work. Published in the early 1980's, the book explored new management methods - revolving around employee empowerment, fostering innovation and decentralized control. Exploring dozens of leading companies, Peters identifies 8 basic principles to "Stay on Top of the Heap":* Bias to action* Stay close to the customer* Promote autonomy and entrepreneurship* Productivity through people* Executives need to be hands-on and values driven* Focus on the business the company knows best* Keep a simple form and few layers of management* Foster tight adherence to values and high tolerance for employees accepting the valuesThese 8 principles are tough to argue - yet the majority of the companies Peters profiled in the book subsequently failed or went through extremely tumultuous times (IBM, TI, Delta Airlines, Dow, Exxon, Dana, Blue Bell, DEC, Amdhal, NCR, Wang and Xerox to name a few). Perhaps they didn't stick to their knitting - or perhaps there are other factors besides the 8. The bottom line is that the book is now nearly 30 years old, and much has changed in that time. Peters has newer books that are more on point for this century. This is a good foundational read, and an exceptional author. It is just 25 years past a 5 star review.

Wish I'd read this in high school. A book of mentoring for those who don't have the types of mentors to help them achieve their greatest potential. If one happens to have Jack Welch or Warren Buffet, Zig Ziglar, Oz Guiness or Bill Gates as a mentor, then you probably don't need this book. If not, you probably should get it. I mean, seriously, a $10 investment for hundreds of years of billion-dollar life coaching!

Like many groundbreaking works, this one must be seen as important when it was written for what it said then, and important now for what it has led to. Inspired, without doubt, by the monumental Drucker study of IBM, it took case analysis a step further. Its seminal ideas are found in many contemporary studies and schools or management thinking which have taken these principles yet further. That doesn't mean it should no longer be read. But, after reading it, and to get the most from reading it, other contemporary works should be included in your reading list. For example, Jim Collins' "Built to Last" and "Good to Great", and John Roberts' "The Modern Firm" take Peters and Watermans' original insights many steps further. "In Search of Excellence" however, is unlikely to lose its status as a classic, and the broad strokes of its conclusions will continue to be recognized as timeless principles.

#63,274 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I was strongly dismissive of this plot when I heard about it several years ago. Recently I found myself with no comics to read so I paid a few bucks for this on kindle. I was very pleasantly surprised. The art is fine. The dialogue is decent at times, but it hits high notes when Otto is ranting and bragging. The presence of Peter in the back of Otto's mind adds a dynamic to it, but he mostly feels like a wet blanket (that said, we need to have Peter's presence as a moral anchor and also a hope that the status quo will be eventually restored). In this first volume, Otto provides strong evidence that he is, in fact, the superior Spiderman. The bit where he finds out that Peter Parker does not have his PhD is fantastic. Kudos, Mr. Slott.

Best marvel comic I've read in a while. Interesting and compelling story. Dr. Octopus taking over spiderman's body (not a spoiler, this is the premise of the entire series) is more than just an interesting twist. It provides a way to critique almost everything defining about spiderman from an ultra realist perspective. The character development is also incredible, adding depth to Otto Octavious, a previously fairly one dimensional character. This is a must read for spiderman fans.

This run is so unique that is is hard to compare it with other Spider-Man titles. If you have ever wanted to see Spider-man really go nuts on the villains then this one is for you. Sure Doctor Octopus is the one doing it, but Peter is along for the ride and not to happy with him. So you won't miss out on good old Peter Parker either. This book surprised me to no end and I enjoyed it much more then I had originally thought I would. Excellent art combined with a high quality story.

Its good, I just wish I knew what I got into before picking this one up. I'm not a huge fan of the premise.SPOILERS: Not really, its in the first page, but just incase. In the first page we see that Otto Octavius is dead but it was actually Peter Parker who died because in on the last issues of the original The Amazing Spiderman series they switched bodies from a device Octavius made and so Octavius was in Peter Parker's body and Parker was in Octavius and he ends up dying in that body.So Octavius is Spiderman and I like it because he is Spiderman but he does things his own way which is actually more efficient then Parkers methods of doing things. He aims to be the 'Superior' Spiderman. But like I said I'm not a huge fan of this premise but its interesting.

When I first heard the premise behind Superior Spider-Man, I completely dismissed it and tuned it out. Boy, was I wrong. I became interested when Superior Spider-Man appeared in Spiderverse. He intrigued me then and this book really does him justice. It's an interesting twist with great writing and art!

Now THIS is what I'm talking about! This is a great read! This story has me on the edge of my seat the whole time and with each page turn O wonder what the Superior Spider-Man will do next! I absolutely recommend this book!

As a kid I alwayed loved the hero spider-man. Whether it was watching the animated series or the original spiderman films, something was always relatable. Considering my love for the hero spider-man I figured I might as well start reading some of the comics. After some research I picked the superior spiderman series and I gotta say, I'm glad I did. In my opinion, The artwork is stunning. The story is intriguing. The pace of story is perfect. I am a couple volumes into this series and I just absolutely love it!

The idea is ridiculous but the writer saves the day and does a brilliant story. The young Peter Parker is no more and his replacement is an old serious man, this creates very funny situations as the time he scandalizes for not having a doctorate xD I will love to get the whole series that gave to an appreciated and known character a fresh re-take without destroying him. : )

For the past few years, I have been in near constant pain from injuries and just wearing down. It is clear that the author has worked through similar periods herself, and has taken positive steps to work through them and to really improve her life. This is something I want to do as well.In addition to the in-depth explanations, which my rational mind appreciates, there is also an underlying theme of listening to your body and working with it, which intuitively feels like the right approach. Time will tell how successfully I make use of what is contained in this book, but this seems like a great place to start.

Keep Moving, take care of your pelvic floor, and never, ever, speak ill of fascia. Maggie Downie has some strong recommendations in Keep Moving, but they all seem to be based on solid research. The book features extensive citations and a long bibliography as a testimony to her studies in the field of physiology. Downie primarily addresses exercise movements and strategies for pain management. Overall, an enjoyable read. I look forward to trying out many of the movements illustrated in the text.

I take Pilates classes with the author, and have benefited immensely in less than one year. Her enthusiasm and expertise come through in her writing. This book is packed with information and careful guidance suited to all ability levels. I had a sore area at the heel of my hand and one of the movements I learned in class has reduced it almost completely. Use this book to improve how you feel no matter what you are doing.

I found this book very inspiring. I take Pilates from Maggie now and after reading this - and I haven’t Finished it yet! I hope to always keep moving! Lots of ripe and easy instructions in the book!

Must have!

Great book...very inspirational.

Great book. Very well written with great advice in an easy to follow format.

Keep Moving is a complete presentation on exercise and relief of pain. The author provides an intense and well researched description of the body, its workings, and how pain can be alleviated through thoughtful movement. The author has years of experience and shares with her readers her insights (backed by research) and exercises for all areas of the body affected by pain. The book is organized into three sections which give the reader an overview of pain, the anatomy and working of the body, and finally well illustrated exercises as they relate to various parts of the body in pain. Great descriptions and step by step instructions along with a few “movement breaks” scattered through the entire narrative sections makes this book easy to read.

I am not including this in my Christmas box of books for my 7 and 9 year-old grandsons. I am putting it in my car in case we ever have a "Nana, do you have any more books for us in here?" moment. What even marginally curious child would be intrigued by facts such as these: The SuperSoaker water gun was originally called the Power Drencher; Zucchinis are about 95 percent water; President Gerald Ford once worked as a park ranger; You can buy Thanksgiving-themed gumballs with flavors such as cranberry, turkey, and pumpkin pie...? This book does no credit to National Geographic, and I suggest that Amazon Shoppers leave out of their carts.

I LOVE this book. Bought copies for my 3 grandsons (ages 8 & 10) and one for myself. Filled with weird and interesting facts with excellent photos. I'm sure this could become a very popular book for kids and school libraries. I do feel there could have been footnotes sighting where the information/facts came from, or a link to find that info on-line. (Some of us like further "proof"). Highly recommended.

For a girl that loves animals and wants to some day become a veterinarian, this is the perfect funny book. My 10 year old is a true animal lover. She says that she wants to be a vet and change the way people view wild animals - and love on the tame ones. She finds this book hilarious and is constantly sharing one of the 300 weird but true facts. Some are hard to believe, but are apparently true. This books is definitely a win in our household and we are looking forward to another edition.

This is a great little book, we don't sit down and read it in one shot rather, I read one or two facts every day to my son. We have both been very entertained with his content, and I highly recommend purchasing this book if you would like to introduce some off-the-wall facts to your kiddo, and yourself :)

My teenager loves books of facts so by now we have all seven versions of this book. There are very few repeated facts between any of the books - he LOVES this series. The information is presented well and is interesting for all ages (at least in our family!). If trivia is your thing, this is the book for you.

My daughter loves to read facts about nature, animals etc. this book was great for her to have light reading and learn something about the world around her.

Love this book. My 9 year old granddaughter was told to practice her reading, so she reads this book out loud to me. We not only discuss the facts of "Weird but true" paragraphs, I also explain the meaning of words that she does not under stand. Provides great "together" time for us.

Purchased for my grandson & he loves it. We keep it in the car so as we are traveling he gets to practice reading - without even realizing it- The facts and photos are really interesting & random - covering all types of subjects. Plus we are all learning new info
