For many years after my return from Vietnam, I searched for a way and a means to try and restore my peace and my sanity. Something that could help me make sense of what I had just experienced. I went down many paths, self destruction and denial being the longest running. I made attempts at finding answers through many means, none of them were right and I knew it in my heart. i struggled with depression, self-medication and a feeling that something needed to be right in my soul, i thought that i had lost a piece of myself. One day I entered a public library not knowing what I was really looking for, no real purpose in mind. As I walked the aisles my eyes locked on a book with concentric blue circles. I can only say that I was drawn to it, I knew instinctively there was something important about it. I opened it randomly and settled on a paragraph from a paper and began to read. Immediately and without a doubt I knew I was reading truth. Its hard to describe the feeling that went thru me, It was like slowly dying from thirst and suddenly being saved by a clear cool spring. I read no more than that first paragraph and immediately went to the counter and checked it out. When I arrived home, I opened it and began to read, what I found was so profound and so intense I realized there was no way I could ever complete this book in the normal 2 week check out time.. I then went to the contact information, called the foundation and ordered my own copy. I believed I needed to start at the beginning which I did and read every written word. I have fairly rapid reading skills yet I could not read more than a few paragraphs at a time without falling asleep totally exhausted by the effort. It took me one year to finish the book reading it nearly every day. Almost all of what I read seemed nearly incomprehensible to me at the time but I knew instinctively that it was truth. By the time I had finished it I realized I had read the most profound book of my life ... and yet I felt as if I had hardly absorbed it at best. I immediately went back to the beginning and began reading it all over again, the second time it took approximately 6 months to complete, I began to understand more and more as time and pages went by. That was many years ago now and I read a paper or a portion of one from the website every day. The reading of the Urantia Book is a life journey, to become a part of your everyday existence. I think of portions of it at all hours of the day, often times as I wake each morning. To say it changed my life would be an understatement. Some of you will find it to be the same.

This book took me over two years to read. The 1st thousand pages required a lot of concentration in order to understand the complexity of the content of God and the universe. I read many books in the meantime. I would read a Paper (chapter), or part of one, and have something else to turn to (The Nightingale, All the Light We Cannot See, La mano de Fatima, La Catedral del mar, Dime quien soy, The Physician, among others). All in all, the entire book was a fascinating learning experience, a journey of discovering so much that I had never imagined the possibility of existing. It has made everything that I did know about history and religion so much clearer, and it explained things that never made sense to me. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who has read it and I wish one of my friends or colleagues would so that I could discuss it with someone. It was the learning experience of a lifetime, and has profoundly changed me. I will always be grateful to the person who recommended it to me, one of my students who died last year at the age of 25, who I know is on his journey to perfect himself, even as God is perfect.

This Book is the most profound compilation of wisdom and truth that one could ever read. It brings together truth from all across the world and it's major religions throughout our worlds entire history. Its basically an encyclopedia for truth and spiritual wisdom. But even then it's so much more. You could read and re-read it for an entire life and still be only at the beginning of what it offers. What it offers is living truth. The entire book is about universe reality (love) and how we can grow and become empowered in and through it. It is a journey into the endless river of truth, beauty and goodness. A journey that once begun, words begin to fail for descriptive purposes of just what this book really is, as it is so much more than just a book. It answers pretty much any and every question one could ever think of. If questions such as, who are we? how old is the world? why are we here? where are we going after this life? who were Adam and Eve really? did we evolve from animals? whats the purpose/meaning/value of life? ever crossed your mind then this book should be on your must read list. If you believe in Jesus and wanted to discover more about Him, His loving and merciful nature and wonderful plans for you, this book is definitely for you. Even if you don't but are spiritual and or seeking truth, you wont find a more enlightening manuscript anywhere. It supports no particular religion but shows us how to find and draw out the truth, beauty and goodness within them all and encourages each of us to develop a personal relationship (religion) with the indwelling spirit fragment of God living and loving within each and every one of us. It's nickname is the "Truth Book" and for very good reason. The tough part for many is the faith it takes to believe it really is a "Revelation" written by the Angels above us. I have read it and am wholeheartedly convinced it was. It either was or wasn't but if there is supposedly a book on earth written by angels wouldn't you want to read it for yourself and be the judge? Trust me there is no way a human being could write like this and you will feel that inside of you after reading just one page if not one paragraph?! Over one million words and not a single contradiction or inconsistency. It doesn't exclude -it includes, all of us, as we are all children of the same God-Father-Creator and we may call Him whatever we wish, He loves us all and has never revealed Himself by name only nature. If you are on a spiritual journey and wish to discover more of the true and loving nature of God, I encourage you with all my heart take the chance and the time and you will be forever grateful.....May God bless you in all your strivings!

#29,069 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Simplistic story, one dimensional characters. I agree with previous reviewer that Branden's responses: ignoring trouble, fighting and running was geared to the 12-15 year old reader. Definitely video game feel with acquiring team of helpers. And yes, I wondered why Trade Guild was not reported to or involved with evil abuses Branden observed or got involved with. A long way to go to emulate Anne McCaffery's Pern series. I read book #2 and #3 to give author a chance to flesh out plot and characters. They were a little better, but similar problems with simplistic plotting and character development. I could see there would be repercussions with VII 's residents getting along with "muties" that the author ignored. Branden's group tended to "We decide, know best, and all humans will happily agree...if not we eliminate the problem." McCaffery's Pern series embraced humanity in all it's goodness and flaws, and evolved realistic outcomes of a dragon/human colony trying to survive.

Buying a book by it's cover can lead to disappointment as often as it can lead to an amazing story. Free Trader is in the latter category.I expected a space sci-fi adventure, but Free Trader is something completely different. It's the story of a free trader on the world Vii... short for Cygnus VII, as it turns out. The 'Ancients' had a serious falling out 400 years or so ago. When I say serious, I mean atomic war serious. The only survivors that remain live in a feudal society similar to Earth in the 1500s or there about. There is little technology beyond iron age skills.Free Trader Braden decides to travel across the Great Desert to the southern continent to look for 'Old Tech' to bring back north to trade. He travels with his Hillcat who he is bonded to through a telepathic link. Along the way they meet Skirill, a giant eagle-like beast who can also communicate by telepathy. The adventure begins.I very much liked the way this story develops. The chapters are fairly shor but continually interesting and entertaining. There is action aplenty as the small band increases in size toward the end. What I assumed was to be a space adventure, turned out to be an adventure all right. Just not in space. The character development is wonderful as the reader learns about Braden, the Hillcat - Golden Warrior of the Stone Cliffs, or G-War for short. Skirill the Hawkoid, Master Aadi, the flying tortoid and Micah, the girl warrior. You'll have to read it to understand just how special this story really is.This seems to be a tale for all but the very young, as there is some scenes of raw violence and a bit of sexual innuendo.I greatly enjoyed this book and will read the four sequels... unless they get wonky as many sequels do.

I didn't have a lot of expectations for this book, as most adventure sci-fi is a little too shallow and meat headed. Not the case here. These books embrace the fact that science-fiction can teach us how to become better human beings. A good sci-fi writer is a portent and a profit, and Martelle nails that with his thoughtful Free Trader Braden and crew.In book 1 Braden abandons trade in the south to venture northward through the great desert, in search of Old Tech. He sets off with the aid of his bonded Hillcat Compaion G-War (Craig must own cats, because he gets their insanity), and a Hawkoid named Skirll. Hope of making enough money to settle down with a companion and live comfortably is what drives Braden at first, but when he meets his next companion, a Tortoid named Aidi and discovers old tech way-stations in the desert, his thoughts begin to change. My favorite part about these stories is how it feels like you are part of a Table Top Roll Playing Game. Every night I read a few chapters in a grand adventure and wonder how I can get a flying Tortoid of my own. I'll pass on knowing what my cat's think. ;)

This book was just okay for me. I give it 3.5 stars. It's enough to get me to continue the series :)What I liked: The world-building behind the story. The adventures the protagonists have. The motivations of the main character. The realistic interaction with "Old Tech."What I didn't like: The writing level... seems to be written for young teens, yet some of the subject matter isn't appropriate at that level (more for older teans). The language changes... why would the only words to change over 400 years be the measures of time: cycle for year, turn for day, etc. All the humans speak the same language still, even those separated by the desert between north and south.

I bought the first in the series and I enjoyed the storyline premise. Post space travel era people living in relative bronze age... learn they can speak telepathically with sentient creatures... and there are a LOT of sentient "mutations" on Cygnus VII to explore and meet. Fun, interesting, good discussion of issues/morals/decision making ... Pretty good book overall. It was at least good enough to convince me to go ahead and buy the remaining books in series for my device.However... in book two... it quickly became apparent that the authors best ideas got used up in Book one... as the story line got more and more disjointed, implausible, and ... sorry... hackneyed/ predictable / awkward. I should have stopped after the first book. I'm now into book 4 and am close to deleting the rest off of my device as a lost cause.

As a rule, I normally avoid post apocalyptic books ( one exception, The Stand by Stephen King), and I really didn't know that that's what this was, having just skimmed through the book description. I just read something about a cat and his companions and figured it was gonna be another silly attempt by an author to try and write something different. I was not prepared for the unique characterization employed by the author and his fleshing out of all principles involved, human and animal. I am now very glad I gave the book a chance and look forward to the rest of the series. Then, admiring the authors writing style, will be forced to read some of his other works. Well worth the time and effort to read. Thanks, Craig
