I have used the McConnell book for my MACROECONOMICS courses for the past 20 years and have obviously rated it highly. I cannot stand the 19e McConnell, et al book. Initially, I looked it over briefly - a BIG mistake. I saw that the first three chapters which comprise my first exam, were virtually unchanged. Then I checked out the middle and latter parts and they seemed to be virtually unchanged so I told my prospective students they could use either the 18th or 19th editions. I was (probably am) planning to use the 19e this fall, although I may give up teaching altogether. Later, when I happened to check out chapters 4 & 5, I was appalled. Chapter 4 formerly "The U.S Economy: Private & Public Sectors" is now "Elasticity," which I certainly teach in MICROECONOMICS but just touch upon in MACRO. I have no idea where the former Ch. 4 material went. Chapter 5, formerly "The U.S. in the Global Economy" also seems to have disappeared. I thought highly of that chapter also. The 18th Edition had added two chapters. Chapter 6, "An Intro. to Macro." was a fantastic addition which I embraced wholeheartedly. Ch. 17 on "Financial Economics" was a welcome addition since students are always confused initially when $$$ or gold is not considered to be capital but a pipe wrench is. However, the latter part of the chapter got very complex although the "time value of money" is quite useful. Still, I do not take the time to cover it properly and just give lip service to the concepts I mentioned. Perhaps my cherished material from those two chapters is still hidden in the bowels of 19e but so far I haven't found it.At this point, I am just disappointed in 19e and miss the 18th. I am thinking of asking McGraw-Hill if they could just run off about 100 copies of Chs. 4 & 5 from the 18th Edition for which I would gladly pay.Sincerely,Robert B. MillerAdjunct Professor Emeritus of Economics (econ teacher)American River CollegeSacramento, CA

Can't say I liked this book. Plenty of assumptions and incorrect statements.Basic surface level info, is not rigorous and does not delve into topics. Mostly memorize all these industry specific terms and a couple models, rinse and regurgitate. Paired with the online homework most of the answers to questions are in bold face, with few obscure pointless questions buried in the text. Definitely in noway unbiased, counter-points are barely mentioned or glossed over and dismissed. Which irks me with college textbooks. As for my class experience: I read the book (skipping all the side stories/blurbs) did the online homework and study-guide (worthless) and aced the class .

Great book and well put together. I got this book for a class in collegeThere can definitely be more up to date diagrams and content. I also believe that this book could be a lot more uncluttered with its content. It is very compact in it's information and causes learning macroeconomics to be harder than what it should

I am so pleased with this entire purchasing experience. The book arrived exactly as described, in terms of quality, actually even better! Yes, some of the text is highlighted as seller said it it would be, but it's only some key terms, i.e., stuff you'd probably highlight yourself anyways. This purchase was a tremendous value and I love that it was available in paperback. So lightweight! I don't mind taking it with me to class. As far as the text itself it's a typical dated economics textbook. It could be worse. Thanks!

Great book. some writing but I got all the info I needed.

Decent quality for price for seller. The seller gets a 4 star, but the book itself and author gets a 2 star because it is hard to follow and too verbose. Great read to put you to sleep, but needed it for class.

It's an older copy but still has the chapters I need for the class. Occasionally it'll have missing information but so far it hasn't caused a problem for me

It is the exact book I need for the class which is nice, but the book i received is falling apart. Some pages in the front are falling out of the binding, and it looks like someone cut into the back cover of the book along with a couple papers. The book is still usable so far, it's just a pain making sure it all stays together.

There is a hole in my sidewalk is a mix of diary, "poemary", aphorisms and self-deprecating jokes about relationships of different sorts, with another person, your self, or an object. The book is perfect when you are going through a break-up, divorce or just having problems with your partner.I see it more about human relationships, but the book can be used for relationships with your addiction of choice. The book is full of wisdom but very witty, VERY!, and you will find yourself laughing out loud at most sentences in it! You'll want to re-read it for sake of the wisdom, for the sake of the humour, for the sake of feeling yourself understood and less weird when your life is full of confusion. As a female, I think the book captures what the female psyche perfectly. However, a male will probably think the same! That is so, because the book departs from universal human experiences and ways of relating that go way beyond gender and nationality. The book is extremely short, and it will last you about two coffees. Less if you are a fast reader. Being so, the book is perfect to re/read on the bus, on the toilet, on a trip, on a coffee break, lunch break. Anytime you do, it will be wonderful.I think that this being a classic old book, and a very short book indeed, the price should be more reasonable. Say about 3 bucks.

Discovered me many years ago, and have shared An Autobiography in Five Short Chapters to dozens of people who were caught on that same sidewalk! Had no clue how many other inspirational quotes this author had written!

This book should be a classic. The author has a rare talent to express self awareness in delicate but direct terms. Simple to read, can be taken in short segments. This book doesn't tell you what to do, but rather make you think about who you are.

I have loved Portia Nelson's poem, "Autobiography in Five Acts" since I first read it in college. This book expands on that theory and provides additional insights for self-discovery. I highly recommend it for anyone wishing to change their thoughts and ultimately change their life.

Must read book for everyone who's ever stumbled in life!

My father knew this woman as a young adult, so I purchased the book. I had heard "There's a Hole in My Sidewalk" a number of seminars over the year and presenters never give Ms. Nelson as the author. I enjoyed the poetry and the perspective.

As someone else said, this is a VERY simple book, but that is good. It's not a book in the sense that it's filled with a bunch of words, sentences, chapters, etc. No, it is a series of different poems that relate to each of the 5 main chapters of what they book is about...which is confidence/self-esteem. I read most of the poems as they applied to me, I could relate to almost all of them. When you read them, you think, that's pretty lame, that's so silly, then...you're like...man....that's ME!! I do that!!! It's not a book or poems that's going to fix you, or tell you what to do to fix yourself, but for me, it was an eye opener on what I am doing, and what i need to stop doing, stop worrying about. Anyway, I got a lot from it, I hope you do too.

I learned this "story" years ago and find great parable value in it. I was interested in the entire writing and found that I will remain connected with the Hole in my Sidewalk story; the rest of the work didn't call to me.

Published by Farrar Straus & Giroux; 0374526893; $12.00US; Jun. 99 When John McPhee met Bill Bradley, both were at the beginning of their careers. A Sense of Where You Are, McPhee's first book, is about Bradley when he was the best basketball player Princeton had ever seen. McPhee delineates for the reader the training and techniques that made Bradley the extraordinary athlete he was, and this part of the book is a blueprint of superlative basketball. But athletic prowess alone would not explain Bradley's magnetism, which is in the quality of the man himself--his self-discipline, his rationality, and his sense of responsibility. Here is a portrait of Bradley as he was in college, before his time with the New York Knickerbockers and his election to the U.S. Senate--a story that suggests the abundant beginnings of his professional careers in sport and politics.

I love McPhee. He can make subjects in which I have zero interest fascinating enough to keep me reading. I wanted to read this after having read his famous profile of Bradley in the New Yorker (which is more than half the book). However, I found the post-New Yorker material to be less taut, and ultimately less interesting. Pretty much nothing about his career with the Knicks. The tacked-on tiny bit at the end about his political career was disappointing - neither related to his basketball career (except as an illustration of his fearsome work ethic) nor to his accomplishments in the Senate.

After reading McPhee’s excellent collection of essays, Draft No. 4, I wanted to read some of his oeuvre. Since I have also become hopelessly addicted to the Golden State Warriors, I started with this book about Bill Bradley and basketball.I was not disappointed. His portrayal of Bradley is reverent and heartwarming. And his insights into the magical art of elite basketball are illuminating and inspiring. If you like great writing, stories about amazing people, and basketball, then this is a book for you.Highly recommended.

This is an excellent book about a person who I greatly admired. We are about the same age and I was in college when he was so the story was very nostalgic for me. I had also followed his career with the Knicks and would watch him drive his defender crazy because he was always in motion. His performances in college may not be as well remembered today, but he was one of the greatest college basketball player ever. This is also a story of what you can achieve with practice and dedication. Doug Collins mentioned this book during the Olympics and I am glad he did.

I am a big fan of John McPhee and I'm trying to read all of his work. He's just a phenomenal writer and has an uncanny knack for bringing people to life as he weaves a tale of science, history, basketball, writing and other non-fiction topics, so the subjects are never dry or boring. They are filled with real human beings, warts and all. I just love reading him. This is one of his earlier works and it shows the greatness that made it not just a great sports book but a universal tale of competitiveness, work ethic and physical and emotional drive.

Bill Bradley was born in a small Missouri town, the son of the town's banker, who taught him discipline, hard work, and a love of learning, and his wife, a fiercely competitive but loving former athlete. Their son was one of the most celebrated schoolboy athletes in Missouri history, and was offered scholarships to over 70 colleges to play basketball. However, he chose to attend Princeton University, which did not provide athletic scholarships and was not known for its basketball team, as he had higher aspirations beyond sports. He began to play with the varsity team as a sophomore, as freshmen were not allowed to participate in varsity athletics at that time, and immediately became the star player of the team. Princeton quickly became an Eastern basketball powerhouse, culminated by the 1964-65 team in Bradley's senior year, which reached the NCAA Final Four before losing in the national semifinal to Michigan. Bradley's last collegiate game was against Wichita State in the third place game, and Bradley, normally a pass first, shoot second player despite his immense talent, was given free rein by his coach to shoot and score at will. He finished the game with 58 points, which is still the record for the most points scored by an individual player in a Final Four game. After his collegiate career he attended Oxford on a Rhodes scholarship, and then became an NBA star with the New York Knicks, helping them win two championships, in 1970 and 1973. After his retirement he entered politics, and served as the junior U.S. Senator from New Jersey for three terms. He retired from the Senate in 1997, and ran an unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. presidency in 2000, losing to Al Gore. After that defeat he left politics, but he maintains an active public life, as he has written six nonfiction books and hosts a weekly radio program.John McPhee grew up in Princeton, as his father served as the physician for the university's athletic department. He attended Princeton, and while working as a writer in New York his father called him to come see a kid on the freshman basketball team, who his father described as possibly the best basketball player, bar none. McPhee attended a game with his father, followed Bradley over his career at Princeton, and wrote his first book about him, in 1965."A Sense of Where You Are" describes Bradley's upbringing in Missouri, and his basketball career at Princeton, including his work ethic and approach to the game, which was far beyond even the best players at his level and allowed him to surpass his modest physical abilities. McPhee also portrays Bradley as a well rounded student athlete who participated fully in campus life and maintained a sense of modesty and humbleness that seems archaic, yet refreshing. The latest edition of the book contains numerous photos of Bradley in action, along with addenda written in 1978 and 1999.I would highly recommend "A Sense of Where You Are" for any sports fan, but this would be of interest for anyone who appreciates good journalism or wants to learn about an inspiring and influential man, who has been one of my heroes since I was a child.

I read A Sense of Where You Are because it is listed in the bibliography Mastery. It isn't a guide to mastery; it illustrates mastery using Bill Bradley as an example. The book has a tight focus - the books profiles Bill as a senior at Princeton. Only several pictures and the preface hint at Bill's later achievements. The best line is aptly used in the title. The line refers to Bill's ability to shot without looking at the basket; he has spent so much time on the court practicing, he has an imbued sense of where he is. Bill's sense is the finger tip feel that Robert Greene describes in Mastery. It is cliché to talk about fundamentals in sports, but McPhee avoids cliché while addressing Bill's dedication to practicing the individual skills. Each individual skill is isolated and drilled. The skills are the foundation of strategy. Because of his refined fundamental skills, Bill has more option when reacting to opponents. Whatever they do, he can answer. The book is decent, but not McPhee's best. McPhee elevates his writing in Levels of the Game. It is a better example of how to dissect the different levels of strategy - you see tennis differently, like an insider, after the book.

If you're a fan of Freakonomics and Super Freakonomics, you'll love this book. Here's why:Like many other people, after reading both of the Freakonomics books, I felt like I learned a ton, but I wasn't sure how it would apply directly to my life. And that's okay. They weren't writing a self help book, and I read their work because I was genuinely curious in understanding how the world works. But this book departs from their usual method of explaining how the world works and instead shows you how you can better live in the world. And that's why I believe this is their best book yet. Here's a little summary of what I learned:1. In one chapter, the three hardest words in the english language, they talk about one of the main problems that plagues people today - the inability to say "I don't know." And they show you how it's a deadly combination because "cocky plus wrong" is a recipe for disaster. They then show you how to avoid making this mistake. They even give a word for word script you can use.2. In another chapter, "WHat's your problem," they share the story of Kobayashi and how he became a professional hot dog - and food eater. They walked through his entire process and how he went on to eat 50 hot dogs when people thought eating 30 was impossible. And even though they're talking about hot dogs, you'll see how this can apply to everyone. As an example, back when I started creating videos for Social Triggers TV, a friend of mine told me they were filming about 6 videos a day. And I thought, "Well, I'm new at this ther's no way ill get there." And I would film 3 videos a day. Eventually, as I got good, I got to the magic number - 6 videos in a day and I felt like I was on top of the world. Until I spoke to another friend who told me they do 15 or 20 videos in a day. I was SHOCKED. But I went back to the drawing board, refined my process, and eventually got up to 17 videos in a day.I'm being vague here, mainly because I want you to read the book. But it's funny seeing how the same process I used to increase my video production was used by the hot dog champ as well.3. And my favorite part of the book is when they talk about what they call "the once and done" technique. If you're a non-profit, you'll LOVE reading about this because you'll see how you can potentially increase donations a drastic amount by using this simple marketing tactic. And that's it.Great book and I suggest you buy it and read it.

It is worth the time and the money. The book isn't as earth-shattering as Freakonomics, but it's pretty good. The 4 stars are very well deserved and maybe a little conservative... 5 stars might be a fair rating for the Kindle edition. If you buy the Kindle edition, in addition to the book it comes with a few articles and a Q&A session with the authors. These additions to the Kindle edition do add value. I liked their thoughts and the advice they gave the British Prime Minister on health care. The most interesting, however, was Dubner's interview:"... I think we should treat health and life and death more like a regular good....we need to - it's unfortunate, but we need to - make these horrible choices, where we decide, are going to send our kids to college or are we going to keep great-grandma alive for two more weeks, and the cost might be about the same for those two things. Right now we shy away from those decisions, and we pretend like life has infinite value and we can't make these choices."

Think Like a Freak offers a new perspective for thinking. Thinking is generally done on only one way, but Think Like a Freak offers its readers a new way to think about everyday situation. The truth is that we can’t really predict the future, there IS a medical reason for that condition- not just stress, causality is not caused by correlation, saying “I don’t know” is OK, giving up is sometimes the answer, and thinking like a kid is more beneficial than you think. The authors of Think Like a Freak try to present problems in a way that spin them on their head and force the reader to change their thinking and perspective. Saying “I don’t know” is HARD for most people. It admits defeat in some sort of way and most people don’t want to be wrong or defeated, naturally. But, the authors offer a new way of thinking. Saying “I don’t know” is not defeat, it is the beginning, the jumping off point for new discovery. It also, as the authors say, offers “the power of a good, randomized experiment.” Not knowing is not defeat! As a teacher, the chapter called “What’s Your Problem?” spoke the most to me. It speaks a great deal toward the education problems in the US. Teachers are under enormous strain from almost every angle possible, and Think Like a Freak offers a new perspective for tackling some of those problems. This book is changing my view of what it calls “noisy problems” and making me realize that there are new ways to experiment with learning. Students who come with baggage can be helped if we look at the problem a little differently. We all have barriers that we face out there, it is up to all of us change our perspective.

Q: What is this? A: This is a Reader's Digest version of much bigger books about Epistemology.Q: Who is it for? A: It is not for persons who have spent years reading about Epistemology (like the current writer) but for people who need something that is very light in tone and deliberately made to be very interesting.Q: What are some of the sources that expand on the nature of some of the topics covered in this book? A: 1. Super Crunchers: Why Thinking-By-Numbers is the New Way To Be Smart. Talks about only finding relationships between variables and not getting too caught up in cause and effects; 2. Adapt: Why Success Always Starts with Failure. Talks about making failures survivable and how learning what *doesn't* work is just as important as learning what does work; 3. Various books by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. This book talks about the limits of what *can* actually be known.Q: Do I recommend this book? A: Yes. Even for the full price (Kindle). And even for people who know most of all this information, it's good seeing the authors update said information with new and interesting examples and good prose.
