Lots of tasty tidbits on many deceased film stars, some of them on the "naughty" side. I have many books on Hollywood, but this one contains lots of info I've never read anywhere else. Mr. Donnelly is of course subjective & quite opinionated, which makes it a fun read. "R-Rated" for "language"!

Interesting read

If you missed the one 5 years ago, then this is a must and updated through 2009. Published in 2010. Too early for Elizabeth, Dennis and a few others who recently passed on. But, this book is fascinating and I bought 20 copies for friends, when the first edition came out.

A birthday present for my sister and she loved it. So much fun to read and a lot of dirt and infomation on many stars. I have a copy for myself and I thought she would get a kick out of the book and she did. Something besides another bathrobe..

Should be in every in every Movie Buff library. Interesting facts about all actors and actresses. Kudos to Mr. Donnelly

I recently bought the 2010 edition of this book with great expectations, but was both surprised and disappointed to see the striking number of omissions. From a perspective of someone who likes both the Golden Age of Hollywood and the cream of foreign films, some of these missing names are simply inexplicable. I guess I should have taken much more notice of the British nationality of the author, because it goes a long way towards explaining many of his strange omissions and inclusions. For example, there's nothing about Edward Arnold, one of the great character actors who ever graced the screen, but there are two entire pages on Dorothy Arnold, a wholly forgettable actress whose only claim to fame was being the first Mrs. Joe Dimaggio. That pretty much encapsulates the author's idea of who's important and who isn't.There's nothing on Richard Basehart, the homicidal maniac who escaped through the sewers of Los Angeles in He Walked By Night and many other noirs and drama pictures of the 40's and 50's.No George Brent, a long standing actor who played opposite Bette Davis in more films than any other leading man.No Ruth Chatterton, the star of many of the more celebrated Hollywood "Pre-Code" movies. No Ricardo Cortez, another star of the Pre-Code era with a versatility that extended from Latin lovers to gangsters to the first Sam Spade in the original screen adaptation of The Maltese FalconNo Jeanne Crain, a leading lady whose career spanned 30 years and many memorable roles. No Richard Dix, one of the great stars of the silent era and beyond into the 40's.Here's a beaut: We get Jack Douglas, but no Melvyn Douglas. And for that matter, no Paul Douglas. At this point I'll just list some other omissions by name: Ann Dvorak, Glenn Ford....Pause to note the two missing names that force me to conclude that this is NOT a book for any serious movie buff: JEAN GABIN and TOSHIRO MIFUNE. This is like writing a book on baseball and leaving out Babe Ruth and Willie Mays. But to continue with missing names familiar to any fan of Turner Classic Movies: Van Heflin, Guy Kibbee, Margaret Lindsay, IDA LUPINO (another particularly astonishing omission), JEANNE MOREAU(!), Chester Morris, Jack Palance, Lizabeth Scott, Lee Tracy, Clifton Webb, and last but certainly not least, Warren William. All that said, Fade To Black is entertaining enough, but it's much more of a gossip compendium with a lot of titles thrown in to fill up the pages than a comprehensive reference work. Even at the remainder price, it was an almost complete waste of money for anyone whose interest in movies is more than skin deep.

Fade to Black - "1,500 Movie Obituaries"by Paul Donnelley, Omnibus Press, 2010 Steve McQueen was a macho shrimp, raised in a brothel - a former Marine who was bisexual and died of AIDS. Milton Berle called himself, "The Thief of Bad Gags," and here are the real causes of George "Superman" Reeves death (portrayed so inconclusively in "Hollywood Land." Discover how Joseph Kennedy (JFK's father) first consumed his affair with Gloria Swanson and find out who said of Elia Kazan's receiving the lifelong-achievement Oscar, "If we didn't honor backstabbers in this town, there would be no awards ceremony." At first glance you might wonder who would buy a book like this - film school libraries? But the answer is, most of us have shared our lives with these stars, would be stars, directors, writers and Hollywood groupies. Here finally is a chance to get their story straight from someone who has done the reading, research and follow-through that make them human. There are also great additional reading titles listed after each subject. "Fade to Black" is a terrific title for a terrific book, you need to buy and have on that shelf above your DVD player.- John Lehman, Rosebud Book Reviews

I found this very interesting reading on the last days of celebs we think we know, sent copies to friends, so I guess I like it!

Although this book lacks great detail, I was pleased with that. Too many times authors, in my opinion get bogged down in the minutiae. I was looking to read a book about her life, start to finish, the overall picture. That is exactly what I found in this book. There was very little political opinion expressed which I found to be delightful and a reason to give this book five stars. It must have been very difficult for the author to tell this story with such limited information but I felt she did a great job with what she had. There appear to be other books available that go into greater detail regarding the actual operation of the UGRR and I may read one of them later. But for now, I have a much better understanding of who she was, what she did, and the theatre she operated in. Fascinating as it was, I was at times so angry reading about slavery and wondering how we ever let it happen. This woman is a true American hero, flawed as any of us I am sure, but the author did not focus on that. Another reason I award it five stars. If you want to know who Harriet Tubman was, read this book.

In reading other books about the Civil War period, I kept running into very interesting bits about Harriet Tubman.I knew a little about her, primarily due to articles written when the Treasury announced it would put her on the $20 and decided to learn more about her.If her life was fiction, it would probably have to be toned down b/c it would be unbelievable.Tubman is a fascinating and certainly heroic individual. Clinton manages to do a good job creating a highly readable book despite frequent admissions that there is an awful lot that we don't know, due in part to the fact that Tubman remained illiterate her entire life.At the same time, Clinton seems a bit starstruck by her subject. I was curious enough about some of the material to research bits of it elsewhere and found that less flattering material (which Clinton had to have been aware of) was either played down or left out. Nothing big but it seemed she didn't want to write a single word that wasn't completely positive, and it was enough to leave me questioning the accuracy of the book.Still a good book and Tubman was clearly a person we should know more about.

If we want to understand the racial divide in our country today we need to have a clearer understanding of where it all began. The life of Harriet Tubman not only clarifies the racial issues of our day, but the gender issues as well. I dare say, there is no woman in our American history that has impacted the world around her and changed our history in the process, more than she did. This is a hard read...but worth every effort to finish it.

It is a must-read...providing tremendous insight into the life of this true American patriot and incredible human being! It is a book that thoroughly absorbed my attention, and one that I'm so grateful I read. Dr. Catherine Clinton, thank you.

Well written bio of Tubman. The author illuminates Harrietts relationship to the Seward family and many other prominent people of the age. Very interesting reading if you are interested in Abolitionists, the Civil War and the era of Emancipation.

I was truly amazed at how brave Harriet was in returning to the Deep South again and again to lead so many slaves to freedom. It was enlightening that she had become a ranking soldier, "General Tubman," that helped in the strategy of the raids. Her identity had to be kept secret for her safety, so her name didn't appear in any official records. It was not surprising, however, how our government had, many times, conveniently dismissed her claims for a retirement pension. After the bravery, the leading of the troops, the nursing of the soldiers, the endless serving the needs of the poor and displaced, and all of the praise and acclaim, she died a very poor, but not broken, hero.

Excellent read for anyone looking to get to know who Harriet Tubman was beyond what most people learn in elementary school. I wish there was more analysis of Tubman's political beliefs but still well worth the read for her life story and the history of the underground railroad.

Everyone who cares about the United States and the effect that slavery had on its development should read this book.Tubman's life and efforts on behalf of slaves and former slaves is of major importance.

Although the world building and the plot are primary, I found myself recollecting how the heroine, Spensa, reminded me of an employee I once had in my bakery. Spensa is charismatic and manufactured from a wonderful assortment of vim and vigor. If you’re her best friend, you need fear nothing. She is a character that will have readers screaming for more.POV: First person.BLUSH FACTOR: No worries here. Suitable for all ages and genders.STAND-ALONE OR CLIFFHANGER ENDING? The main story of this volume is complete. It is clear, though, by the ending that more, much more is to come. In other words, if you read to the end of this novel, you will crave for the next.ADVENTURE: YES, with exclamation points.THE WRITING AND EDITING is professional throughout. I found it nearly difficult to take a break while racing through this tale. Having stated the positives, I need to balance it with my single concern that, other than the hero, or heroine, being female, much of this story did seem just a touch too familiar. Oh, and I would like to have seen more of the weak points of young Spensa, to balance her character.EXCERPT‘…About ten minutes before the start of class, three young men walked in together. They were obviously friends, as they were talking and joking softly. I didn’t recognize two of them, but the one at the front—with brown skin and short curly hair—was distinctive in a kind of baby-faced, pretty-boy way.The guy from the test, I realized. The son of a First Citizen who had gotten free admission.Great. We were saddled with a useless aristocrat, someone who lived in the lowest—and safest—of the Defiant caverns. He’d be in flight school not because of any skill or aptitude, but because he wanted to sport a cadet’s pin and feel important. Judging by the way the other two talked, I instantly pegged them as his cronies. I’d have bet anything that all of them had gotten in without taking the test, so our cadet group had three people who didn’t deserve to be there. The tall, baby-faced guy walked to the center of the ring of seats. How could a boy have a face that was so extremely punchable? He cleared his throat, then clapped his hands sharply. “Get to attention, cadets! Is this how we want to present ourselves to our instructor? Lounging about, making idle chitchat? Line up!”Kimmalyn, bless her stars, jumped up and stood at a kind of sloppy attention. His two cronies stepped over and fell into step as well, doing a much better impression of real soldiers. Everyone else just kind oflooked at him.“What gives you the right to order us around?” asked Hudiya, the athletic girl from my own cavern. She stood leaning against the wall, arms folded.“I want to make a good first impression on the instructor, cadet,” Jerkface said. “Think how inspiring it will be when he comes in to find us all waiting at attention.”Hudiya snorted. “Inspiring? We’d look like a bunch of suck-ups.”Jerkface ignored her, instead inspecting his line of three cadets. He shook his head at Kimmalyn, whose version of “attention” involved standing on the tips of her toes and saluting with both hands. It was ridiculous.“You look ridiculous,” Jerkface said to her.The girl’s face fell, and she slumped. I felt an immediate burst of protective anger. I mean…he was right, but he didn’t have to belt it out like that.“Who taught you to stand at attention?” Jerkface asked. “You’re going to embarrass us. I can’t have that.”“Yeah,” I said. “She’d be stealing…’Sanderson, Brandon. Skyward (pp. 62-63). Random House Children's Books. Ok, so let’s address the way Brandon writes: flawless. You don’t realize that you just spent 5 hrs reading his book because his prose (the way he writes)doesn’t detract from the story.Next, the story: it’s a fun yet oddly alien story but it comes across not quite alien. It’s a great story full of mystery while engaging you in tense action. The characters were well done and you saw more character development in main character than you would normally notice in a Sanderson Book. He is getting better the more he writes and this one showed. The problem I have with Sanderson might not really be a problem. I hesitate to start a book of his because it is too good. Literally. I know when I start to read something of his that it will be soooo hard to read other authors afterward. This book is a good example: I just finished reading it. Do I want to jump into another book and continue reading something else? No. I want the next part of this story, or anything Sanderson really, cause it’s just good writing.Sigh, I just have a love hate relationship with Brandon’s books. I think half the reason Patrick Rothfuss doesn’t finish his series is he is taking notes from Robert Jordan: he wants Brandon to finish it for him.Anyway, great story. Fun! Loved it overall.

I stayed up waaay too late reading this, because I was just HOOKED. Every time I think there is a Sanderson book that just won't click with me, I get proven wrong by being sucked in to the story. This story focuses on a teenage girl, Spensa- nicknamed Spin. Her father was a pilot, and she adored him. They BOTH loved the stars. She had also loved stories of old Earth heroes, and due to an incident with her Father being branded a coward - she has turned out a bit hostile and bloodthirsty as a defense.Spensa's dream is to fly as a pilot- like her dad. But the entire community is working against her, to make sure she doesn't turn out like her dad. When Spensa finds a strange wrecked ship on the surface, she decides to try and fix the ship- hoping to fly any way she can.At every turn, Spensa faces setbacks, and horrible people who will never let her live down what her father has done. She's become tough, and hardened by her life in the edges of society, and still- she fights on.This book surprised me in so many ways. There were a lot of things I THOUGHT I had figured out, only to have things twist in another direction.I quite loved this book, and I both love and hate that it is a trilogy, as I am dying to now read what happens next. It ends on a BIT of a cliffhanger...but still has enough of a resolution to not make me throw my Kindle in disgust.

This book is an incredible disappointment. Talk about completely unoriginal world, story, characters, everything. This book is Enders Game meets Divergent meets City of Ember. Not to mention the countless other works in this genre that this novel mirrors. I don’t mind using same storylines but this added nothing new. It was the same story but with different character names. At about one third of the way through I lost hope that this novel was going to add any original ideas and unfortunately it held true to the end. I’m burned out on Sanderson. Oathbringer was trash and now this one is too. I have loved almost everything Sanderson has written but his latest few have fell flat. Sanderson needs to add some diffferent perspectives to his team as they are allowing subpar work to be published. Sanderson is phenomenal at unique world building and having a fun twist - I felt like I read Skyward before and that was disappointing.

I cannot (will not tell you what I used this book for) but I will tell you I love this type of novel..a sassy heroine, a dark hero, and lots of sex. Read this book in one day. Miss Scott is the only author i will spend 3.99 on. I just love sassy heroines who can rescue dark heroes. I also like her books do not dwell on Balls, Ribbons, and such...sooo boring.

The title of this book states it all. The Duke is extremely depraved and not a sympathetic nor likable character. Crispin is wallowing in self loathing, self pity and is meeting his base needs. He has all but ignored his younger sisters, who have become a bit wild and unmanageable. Understanding that he must hire another governess for them, he advertises. What he doesn’t expect is Miss Jacinda Turnbow. She arrives under false pretenses, charms the sisters-and him. There is a betrayal, but by whom: Crispin, Jacinda or another?

I really liked Jacinda Turnbow’s character in contrast to Crispin , the Duke, depraved one. Becoming a governess to the Duke’s two sisters in order to uncover a traitor brings these two characters together. After uncovering a plot against Crispin, Jacinda finds the real traitor amid falling in love with Crispin. I liked this book very much and was sorry the story ended.

Crispin has been in hell since he came home from the war. He is called the Duke of Depravity and he needs a governess to subdue his wild sisters. Jacinda is being forced to work as governess in the Dukes household to save her father and herself from Dunn territory. He is accused of being a traitor and she is to find the proof. But as they get to know each other, they discover that all is not as it seems and Jacinda can save him in every way. This is very well written and an entertaining story.

I got to chapter 5, then just couldn't take it anymore. There is no storyline . How it got 4.5 stars I don't know. Seems like it will be very predictable with him trying to bed her, then she'll eventually give in, and save him from himself. I don't mind sex and romance at all, but all he thinks about is pulling up her skirt. And the mis pronunciation of her name every paragraph grated on my nerves. I would have given it a big fat zero if that had been a choice.

I love Scarlet Scott! Great writing! Makes you feel like you are in the room! Loved.loved.loved

A damaged hero and a heroine with a secret. What’s not to love? Like all of Scarlett’s books, this one had an engaging plot line with well-drawn characters, lots of sexual tension, and a heartwarming conclusion. This author never disappoints.

story told in honest terms; banal yet real language and sexy, the way it should be. deep descriptions of feelings, both tragic and glorious. loved it from the first to the last page.

I disagree with the reviewers who thought there were too many pictures of Charles in the book. Actually, there should be even more! They should paste his face on the body of every man, woman, mermaid and dinosaur in the book. He should be on every sign, sitting in every car, pointing to every attraction and his "holding my cheeks in amazement" photo should be on every page. Some books are a labor of love, this one is a labor of self-love.

I have Americana the Beautiful: Mid-century Culture in Kodachrome, so decided to nab this book as well. Just like Americana the Beautiful, it's lavishly illustrated and done in a very cute, eye dazzling retro style. However, the aim is completely different from the author's previous work. Whereas Americana the Beautiful was about showing kodachromes of everyday American life with some brief commentary, this is more a mixture of kodachromes and snapshots of Charles Phoenix traveling around the US tracking down visiting various roadside attractions. So, it's more of a travelogue if anything. And, I have to say, it's a really great one, filled with a plethora of terrific photographs and background information about a lost period in American pop culture that's disappearing by the second and never got the love and appreciation it should have. You also get to learn where a lot of roadside architecture is still standing or what museums they were sent to, so that's a major plus. However, as great as it is, I agree with some of the reviewers complaining about Phoenix. Some complain about him being in the photos too much. Actually, that's not the issue. It's just that he mugs way too much for the camera in ways that come across as forced. I know what he was going for (like a character out of a corny 1940s or 1950s vintage ad), but the mugging is so over the top that he comes across as the classic suburban dad who thinks he's so funny with his bathroom reader jokes when he's the corniest thing around. I think what is especially turning people off is that he kept replicating that famous Home Alone poster of Macauley Culkin holding his cheeks in surprise. The first time he did this was kind of cute but by the tenth time, I just cringe in embarrassment and thought, "Gosh, what a goofball."Some of the text and photos also came across as a bit self-aggrandizing. I got the sense that he thinks he's a much bigger deal than he thinks he is, like he's reached Bill Nye or Steve Irwin status of cult figure. (He hasn't.) He also name dropped Paul Reubens, which I felt was a little tacky and inappropriate, given the circumstance. (It seemed as if Reubens was either in a bad mood that day or just wasn't enthusiastic about a destination the both of them went to together.)These quibbles aside, I think it's minor compared to what a treasure trove this book is. Ever since a Populuxe-style establishment near my house got torn down, I've been looking hill and dale for the perfect book that captures all the architecture and pop culture artifacts of the jet set era, and I think that Phoenix pretty much nailed it with his approach. Not that other books on the subject are bad but that I just wanted a coffee book that crammed in as many examples of this style as possible without too much dry, academic text, and this one hit the sweet spot. I think I even like this better than Americana the Beautiful, even though that one was technically better. This book has more architecture and road signs, which is what I was desperately looking for.So, I can't recommend Addicted to Americana enough, and I can't wait to see more from the author. If I had any suggestions for him it would be that in the future, if he does any more travelogues, to maybe hire a better photographer who can pose him in a way that captures his fun-loving persona, but not go so over the top with it to where everyone's groaning and rolling their eyes like they do at the corny comic who uses a spinning tie and rubber chicken as part of his act.

I would have enjoyed the book much more if Charles didn't use it as a showcase to plaster his over the top, goofy, glee-filled smiling face on every other page.

I've loved all of the Charles Phoenix books, and this was a nice addition. However, most of the places and things shown are located in California. It would have been nice if more non-CA stuff was covered. Where was the South of the Border Motel ? South Carolina wants to know. One thing I found interesting is that in earlier books, Charles appears one time. In this book, he appears 66 times. Maybe the next book will be "Addicted to Charles".

Fun, kitschy nostalgia from mid-century America. Phoenix is from around the same area in SoCal that I grew up, so many of the pictures are of my own childhood, but there are restaurants, motels and them parks across the country featured. The one thing that irked me were the 84 pictures of Charles Phoenix himself that are in this book. Yep, I counted them. 84.

I have all of Charles Phoenix's previous books and was excited to buy this new one. Tons of awesome pictures as always! The thing that stood out the most in this book is it's a bit more organized; such as pictures of motels and drive-ins on the same pages.

Charles Phoenix is the hysterical historian. If you grew up in the 1950s - 1970s or love mid-century Americana, theme parks, or kitch, you MUST own this book! "I know!"

My husband saw Charles Phoenix when he did a presentation on Disneyland. Some of those clips are found in this book. It is colorful and fun as well as filled with interesting facts about American lifestyle. It is neat to see things from the past that no longer exists today.
