From School Library Journal

As the title suggests, this book is targeted at parents of children and teens who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). The authors detail their coming out stories in the introduction, which provides readers with a clear understanding of their background and perspective. In addition to the intended audience, teens may also find this title useful for making sense of their parents' experience. Similar books do not provide such a personal look into the stories and experiences of LGBT children and teens. The authors have provided pinpointed lists of information and easy-to-follow charts along with short summaries of chapters. The question-and-answer format is clear and the responses acknowledge that there are different options for helping both children and parents deal with the coming-out process. Readers will find important advice and information they might otherwise be reluctant to seek out. An excellent and much-needed resource.—April Sanders, Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL

My seventeen daughter just recently came out to my husband and me. We didn't have any personal angst over it and she always knew we'd be supportive. I've always tried to stay current about LGBT human rights issues but it's a whole other level of responsibility to support your own gay child. I asked her to guide us towards any resources she wanted us to check out. She recommended we read this book. I'd already watched the YouTube videos created by the writers and was excited they'd written a book. So far, it's been affirming and helpful.

I am a grandparent and needed this book very much. I hop[e I can give it to my son and daughter-in-law in hopes of encouraging some open discussion of my granddaughter's coming out. Excellent advice in this book and it is well written. The question and answer presentation works well.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn about more about LGBTQ+ stuff (like me, who wants a parental perspective of a child coming out of the closet) and/or know someone who is LGBTQ+. I really want to give a copy to my mom. I know it will help her whenever I actually come out. The book is writing in a question and answer format so readers can just flip to any part of the book. It also has stories from both parents and their children in each of the chapters. The back of the book contains different resources for both the parent and the child. I'm mildly disappointed that there is not much said about people who identify outside the binary of boy or girl. However, the authors did write that the book was more focused on non-straight children than their gender and there is a chapter that talks about gender in general. It is probably generally because there are some similar responses to coming out as a gender different that the one assigned at birth.

I'm so happy that this book was written! I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It is one of the best books on this topic. Unlike most other books on this subject, this book focuses a lot more attention on lesbian kids. I gave this book to my mom when I came out (I thought the title basically said it all:) and she also found it to be very well written and helpful.

This book was very helpful for me as a parent of a gay son. It helped me to know how to talk with my son as well as how to handle telling other people and their responses.

This is a great book to help parents of lgbt kids and also for lgbt kids or adults to read. While the questions are directed to parents the answers may help lgbt youth feel better about the reactions they may receive or questions that people ask. This is all new to many people and while it may have taken a long time to come to the conclusion that you needed to come out as lgbt you need to give others the space to ask questions and come to terms with it as well. Sometimes what sounds like a negative question is just that a question with no malice attached to it more of a information gathering to help the other person process the information. Each chapter focuses on different aspect of coming out and at the end of each chapter there is a short summary of what was talked about. There are real life stories and scenarios scattered throughout the book that also help make this book more accessible and not just feel like a textbook.

Interesting book !

Lots of factual data and easy to understand information.
