I used this on a weekend trip to LA, having never visited before and knowing very little about the area. Some things I wanted to do before I read the book were driving down the strip, visiting the Hollywood sign, and checking out Long Beach. This book changed all my original plans and made my trip BETTER. More organized, at least. I didn't realize how many different beaches there were! A hidden gem in this book was the Griffith Observatory. Visiting that place was the best part of my trip, offering fantastic views of the city and the Hollywood sign. And there are many walking/hiking paths near the Observatory, too!All in all, I would recommend this to anyone who feels lost in online reviews/guides, and wants some decent suggestions on places to visit, things to (and not to) do, and food to eat.
Great guide book just wish there was a little more in the Anaheim/Disneyland section.

I always like to have an “In-hand†travel book when I’m on vacation. Smartphones, Wi-Fi, and GPS have made traveling easier, but a physical travel guide is a smart investment to have in your bag for all those times when the internet is down, slow or nonexistent.I’ve used both Fodor’s and Lonely Planet but for me the edge goes to Fodor’s. It’s written by locals who have an upfront and personal relationship to the area. They’ve been around for over 80 years, the format is easier on the eyes (especially for us seniors) and the price point is reasonableThis volume features Los Angeles and parts of Orange County. With more folks taking “Staycations†I would still encourage them to purchase one of these guides. You’ll find out more about your area than you ever imagined was there. Some of the top reasons to Love L.A. is the Star Gazing (both the observatory at Griffith Park and he ritzy enclaves in Beverly Hills). Eating: everything from food trucks to high end dining. Beaches: only the best for surfing or sun bathing. Shopping: everything from tiny off the beaten track shops in Chinatown to the Kardashian glitz of Rodeo Drive. Architecture: from art deco to the Music Center. Scenic Drives: From the mountains to the sea and all over the county.There are lots of pictures, travel tips, Fodor’s Choice for their top recommendation, and Travel Smart which is Tips for transportation, accommodations, electricity, healthcare, emergencies, and safety. Fodor’s is a good choice for both solo and group travel whether you’re close to home of in a far away land.
Great informative book with locals favorites & must see hot spots.There is a great paper map in the back to help plan out a trip.For me, Fodor's is where I go once I decide on a trip & want to make a plan.Lonely Planet is my dreaming of visiting, go to guide.Fodor's is great information written by writers so while authentic, it's a bit polished so,I stiil check out other sites for reviews.Trip Advisor has been my angel here & abroad. Saved me a ton of time on cruises.The Fodor's book doesn't have a lot of pictures that will entice you.There's a good selection & in color but it's more like a newspaper travel section.Single paragraph summarizing each spot.Like most travel books, it's broken down by location with an area site map at the beginning of each chapter to familiarize.It's throughly inclusive of food, shopping, historical & contemporary spots of interest.This book definitely entices you to want to explore LA.As an extensive traveler, mostly solo through my life, just a quick safety & navigation tip.Never take a map in public to find your way around, it SCREAMS to criminals, please take my stuff while I'm distracted.You could get pick pocketed & never know bc someone bumped into you while you were looking at your map.What I did before phones was, investigate where I wanted to go & write it down with cross streets so,I could ask for directions without saying I'm going to a hotel or the like.What I do now is, use Google maps on my phone, star my places of interest & put in walk mode.Lets me be aware of my surroundings & also familiarize where I'm going.Just a tip, from a cop's daughter.While this book is a great starting point, I'm giving 5 stars based on what it is,but travel is about expanding your mind so, go to local websites or other travel sites to complete the picture & while your there,Be in the moment & ask a shopkeeper or server where they like to go. You'll have a blast !
Nowadays with Trip Advisor and the internet we have mostly changed how we plan vacations. Instant reviews are available, but what is lacking is an over picture of the place you are visiting. Sure, if you know you are going to Universal Studios, and that is it, then you probably do not need a travel book. But if you like to explore the areas around whatever major attraction you are visiting, a book can be invaluable. With a book you can orient yourself to the entire area, rather than skipping from one “major attraction†to the next.Lived in LA about 25 years ago, and a lot has changed. This book is fairly small, and covers a wide area, so it is not in depth. It does a good job of giving an overview of the various areas, but not in detail (for example the beach cities each get a paragraph description).In general I prefer Fodors, the suggestions are a lot more practical. This book is a good wide range review for planning a trip to LA, supplemented by more specific guide books or internet research and you will have both the big picture and the detailed information you need.PS Ask the people in the hotel for local restaurant recommendations, you will generally find the best eating by getting opinions from people who live in the community.
