This is a long book. But the amount of information MacYoung presents could fill at least a couple semesters in college if you delve into its depths. Most "self-defense" books only cover the forceful side of self-protection, but being able to spot, avoid, defuse, and walk away are going to serve you far more often than any physical technique ever will. The before and after of violence is where this book lives. Learning to keep your monkey on a leash and how to spot when someone else isn't working from a monkey script is what you will learn.Skip the BS mantas and "surefire" ways to stay out jail. Read this book, then read it again. Mark the pages up and cross reference them with other respected authors.
Although not light reading, well worth the time and effort if you "think" you know all about what constitutes self defense. I actually thought I did until reading Marc MacYoung's book. This book prompted me to get a legal protection plan for my wife and myself. I know that many of my friends believe that because they see themselves as "good people" that they will be given lots of slack if they injure or kill a "bad guy". Mr. MacYoung articulates that it just isn't so. He proceeds to show how tiny the real boundaries that constitute self defense verses murder or aggravated assault are. In addition, MacYoung delves into the criminal mindset and shows indicators that these folks project. These "tells" can be spotted and gives you and me the break we need to get out of Dodge or prepare to defend. Mr. MacYoung's use of language can only be appreciated by folks who have either been in the military or in a gang. Not for the prudish folks out there. I'm going to read this book again in a couple months as Marc, "The Animal", MacYoung recommends. Read it and find out all you don't know so you can articulate what you did and why if faced with a self defense situation.
This book goes on my top five list of books to read for anyone interested in interpersonal violence. The author does an incredible job of describing and debunking common misconceptions about violence. His goal is twofold: first, to give the reader some tools to recognize how violence begins and escalates, so that they can prevent it, avoid it, or de-escalate. Secondly, to give the reader that background, so that if after all their efforts the violence happens anyway, what they do will truly be legal self-defense, and not get them put in prison. In this book he covers such diverse topics as the monkey brain, and how it drives the best majority of social violence in our lives, and how to control our own monkey brain and avoid triggering someone else's monkey brain. He talks about witness grooming, de-escalation, legal defense, the social and legal aftermath of a violent encounter, and how to avoid, predict and deal with asocial violence. All of his points are clear, and well explained. He makes a point of acknowledging when he is indebted to other authors such as Rory Miller, and where he disagrees with them, as well as providing a balanced view of the disagreement. The only downside to this book is that his thoughts are often rambling and disjointed, so he repeats himself frequently. He very often does not have a coherent flow to his thoughts. Additionally this book could've benefited from an edit for grammar, spelling and punctuation. However, I felt that given his topic, not to mention his background, this was a minor point and did not detract from the subject matter at all. If you read any book about violence, this should be one of them.
Every body should read this book. Specially tough guys aspiring to become MMA or black belts. That includes the ladies. What is self defense and what is not self defense is perfectly laid out in this book. I was just like many other people who joined martial arts groups to learn self defense but by reading this book and looking back I like many others were just learning how to fight , be bad asses , not take BS from anyone , I was learning how to use a stick and a knife for "self defense". My jaw hit the floor thinking about what could have happened to me if I was to ever apply what was being taught in those dojos. To all martial artists and students do your selves a big favor and read this book before you find your selves in jailbeing prosecuted for something you thought was self defense but was only illegal violence.
Traditional martial arts (Jujitsu, Aikido, Krav Maga, etc.) are only a small piece of the violence puzzle – and I’ve realized how limited those tools are if you’re not on the mat. On the street, there are no rules or referees, and it’s real easy to end up being prosecuted even if you’ve done everything right. Assuming you survive.Firearms training and study is important too. For example, classes and books by Massad Ayoob are outstanding for both surviving a lethal force encounter and the legal aftermath. For empty-hand lethal force, Tim Larkin and his TFT program have quite a lot to offer for when the violence is “for realsâ€.I've studied the various parts of the "elephant" of violence, but have been trying to piece together my own vision of what the entire animal looks like. I really, really need to thank Mr. MacYoung for this book, "In the Name of Self Defense ...". I hadn’t even finished the kindle version before I ordered the paperback too – you need this book on your bookshelf! This book is GOLDEN. I'd like to call it the "Grand Unified Theory of Violence", at the risk of offending physicists. I've seen nothing like it. The way he lays out the framework of the continuum of violence, especially the articulable things we need to look for - is the best and most comprehensive thing I've ever seen. Thanks for showing us the whole elephant at once!
