I thought this was a pretty good read only thing I did not like was that it ended so abruptly left you hanging so I can no wait to read the next book in this series.

T his book was good. I read it all in one setting. I highly recommend this book to all who love reading stories about the Amish.

While I enjoyed this story, it was much too short and lacked substance. Now I just but still another book to get the whole story

I enjoyed this book. It was a quick and easy read with strong characters that face life's decisions with a reverence for Gott(God) .

I was never bored . The story kept my interest the entire time.

I liked the book, but wish it was longer, and not just stopped and continued in the next book. I didn't realize that would happen, so didn't have the 2nd on my kindle and had to wait till the next day to download the rest of the story. I did download the 3rd at the same time!

I will be waiting for the next story in this series of stories. The author has gotten my curiosity up. The series sounds like it will be as good as her many others.

I consider myself a professional Rubyist and Clojarian by trade and have often dreamed of a world in which someone would optimally combine the best aspects of both languages while leaving as much as possible of the shortcomings of either behind. When Jose Valim introduced Elixir, I was excited about a ruby-like functional programming language on the Erlang VM. It wasn't until I read this book by Chris McCord that it became clear just how much of a master stroke Elixir's language design and implementation decisions were.This book is a straight-forward presentation of the basic building blocks for AST manipulation via Elixir Macros. Reading this book allowed me to feel immediately comfortable both leveraging metaprogramming techniques in my own code and reading/reviewing the metacode of others. The choice of examples is extremely helpful in grokking the basics and served as a reference for me whenever I would get stuck looking over more advanced code examples in the wild. Chris' encouragement to actually use macros (when appropriate) in general day-to-day programming is in pleasant contrast to the unfortunate "avoid using macros" party-line that tends to be echoed in the Clojure community.I read this book having read Colin Jones' Mastering Clojure Macros and taken Colin's class at Clojure/West. I consider both Metaprogramming Elixir and Mastering Clojure Macros must reads for AST-based metaprogramming and, although they cover metaprogramming in two entirely different languages, much insight can be gleaned from reading both.

Great book; recommend for advanced Elixir users and not people who are just picking up the language. Much of the macro writing involves manipulating Abstract Syntax Trees, which you most likely won't do unless you are writing a framework or just super skilled at Elixir and have the need to cut down on repetitive code.

The fact that the Elixir language is gaining popularity is a great thing, considering how good it is.The language itself is around for almost three years now, but only recently books are popping out.Learning by a guy who uses the language from its very beginning is a very different experience than struggling with books written by Elixir newbies (although experienced in other languages)...Chris is one of the former guys, having presented Elixir at RailsConf '14.He's also an experienced Ruby programmer, that's particularly useful from the meta-programming point of view.In case you are interested on the Erlang/OTP Elixir counterpart, i suggest the Saša Juric (Elixir in Action) book: again learning form an Elixir alpha-geek that was an Erlang aficionado is a real pleasure.

This book provides a lot of value for its ~100 pages! You'll find a bunch of practical examples of Elixir metaprogramming in the wild. Great for anyone wanting to go beyond the basics and really understand the open-source libraries out there for Elixir or those that want to write their own libs to reuse across projects. Definitely a 5/5!

I love the flexibound binding. I think this binding will result in the book's pages not coming out eventually as it is well used in the field.The paper is thick, white, glossy and has brilliantly colored pictures that are absolutely beautiful. Not only do the high quality pictures help me identify rocks, it is so beautiful that I just enjoy browsing through the book. I'm a complete novice and love rocks more than I like to admit. But I have to say, that I ALMOST enjoy going through this book as much as going through my rocks.Patti Polk writes in a style so that I remain interested and want to continue to learn. It's no wonder since she wrote the book for novices as she states, "ease of use is a priority, with special emphasis on the beginning collector". I especially enjoyed the sections "Introduction to Collecting Rocks and Minerals", "How to Locate and Collect Rocks and Minerals", and "Use and Care of Rocks, Minerals, and Gemstones".Who knows, with great books like this that make learning fun, I may get past the novice stage at some point

This is a gem of a book, if you will pardon the pun, and a welcome addition to my collection. I already have seven books on identifying gems and minerals and another twenty or so on where to find them, so what is special about this book? First of all I noticed the pictures, beautiful pictures, but more importantly pictures which I could relate to. In my other books I get an erudite description, but usually the pictures do not look much like the rocks I find or see at shows. Patti has chosen the rocks to photograph so well that they all look like the rocks and minerals I have, or have seen. I found the introductory thirty pages on equipment and practical collecting very clear. If I had never been on a field trip I would now know what to expect: the picture of a flat tire in a remote area is a timely warning that there are risks in our hobby. But it was the 230 pages of examples of uncut materials, polished items and completed jewlery which really caught the eye. The classification and illustration of the various categories of agate is splendidly done as are the other groups and minerals. Bravely Patti has added the 'value' of each item, listed by pound, ounce or gram. This is a very valuable resource, although it may go out of date very quickly depending on the value of the dollar and popularity and availability of each item. It has led me to rethink what rocks and minerals I have now, and to look again at the items which I have partially discarded as my 'yard' rocks. Patti Polk's enthusiasm for our hobby flows through this book and we must be thankful that she has filled a gap in the literature available to rockhounds.

Great photos and lots of information in this book. My mom is a true rock hound and has been collecting rocks, minerals, fossils, etc.. for YEARS and has an incredible collection. I gave her this book for Christmas and it's one of her favorites. She has so many pages and notes highlighted in it now. She carried this book with her on a recent trip to Colorado when she went digging for aqua-marine and rose quartz and all kinds of other rocks. She has years of knowledge and tons of books on the subject -- and this particular book ranks as one of her favorites and she refers to it often!

A great book for your coffee table or nearby your rock collection! Filled with excellent photographs, the author does a great job of covering the basics of mineral and gem collecting. The book does not go into the nitty gritty details of identifying minerals, cutting or shaping gemstones, etc., etc., but rather gives you just enough information to get started. It is written from the author's extensive personal experience and covers most of the topics. I keep my book out and displayed near my rock collection because it is enjoyable to pick up and thumb through from time to time. Even non-collectors enjoy looking at this book!

Very useful for someone who appreciates gems and and dabbles in jewelry-making, but is not necessarily going into the selling side of the business. Information is presented simply and clearly, includes a glossary and many helpful photos. Tells a little bit about the author and her expertise. Also gives interesting tidbits on uses of gems and minerals over the centuries.

Love this book information however, the print is very, very small and light printing. What a plus it would be if this was corrected and printed on non glossy paper. the info is a five star but the print is very tiny.

very informative! perfect for me as a new rock tumbler user. hardness info was very beneficial for determining rocks that could be tumbled together.

I should start off this review by stating that I do not feel that cutting up nature's treasures is always a good thing. I'll not review the lapidary aspects of the book, because save for slicing a piece of agate in half, and polishing the exposed surfaces, I'm not a 'cutter.' Opening a geode is also generally a good thing, just don't monkey with the crystals and matrix to make bookends.I'm an agate guy, so much of the book was like revisiting a dear old friend. This would the book's main strength, if it was not for the museum quality pieces shot with precision and care. The book is all about natural beauty. If you already know of good collecting sites, I still highly recommend the book for its beauty and quality of the images. There is at least one stunner on every page.However, if you don't know "where they are," this book is too vague--dramatically so--in assisting the aspiring amateur with places to look for the good stuff. That's by far the otherwise exemplary volume's shortcoming.It's a great book, but a poor field guide. It's really as simple as that. It serves--what I believe to be its intended purpose--exceedingly well. Give it a sacred spot on your bookshelf. Bringing this into the field may not even be lawful. Don't break the law.

I purchased this book to replace the one I have been reading once a year, since it's been published! I'm a trivia buff but that is not the only reason. The excellent writing and depth of subject is spellbinding. A few more years of this and I'll have it memorized. The original volume was snatched up by a good friend who knows how much I love it.The product and the timely service are great!

It is always fun to explore customs, the totally invented ways of doing ordinary, and in this case, necessary daily activities. This book takes us on a world tour around the common table. It is entertaining and broadens our knowledge of the activities that comprise "human nature."

Entertaining, relevant, interesting and completely enjoyable. If the topic of the dinner table, or accessories interests you in any way, I believe this book to be of great interest to you!

This is a very interesting book. It is not a book that just talks about table manners although some are mentioned and their origens.This book is about why we eat the way we do, and why we have rituals of eating in different societies. Very educational and reinforces our standing In heirarchy over all other animals. We are special on this earth, like nothing else in the world. Meant to be an image of God.

Interesting book. I learned a lot, connected the dots and even reviewed my own manners. This book even touches on cannibalize manners or protocol. I skimmed over those. Not a riveting book, but informative and interesting.

She came out with some weird stuff I would never have thought had anything to do with eating, but upon reflection, figured out where she was heading. You have to slog through some stuff, but it was very interesting.

The book reviews various behaviors related to food and explains the etymology of their names. But after reading a few chapters it becomes quite boring.

I said it has a Eurocentric viewpoint, but it actually covers table manners from across the world...just viewed though a more European lens.It was actually incredibly interesting. Visser does a great job of detailing both the traditions (ancient, obsolete, recent, and modern) and the reasons behind them. She also describes how a culture influences or is influenced by their food and rituals around it and provides explanation for how the rituals (and utensils) evolved. All in all, it's really very interesting. A little slow, but dense with good material, so it's alright.For anyone interested in sociology or food history, or anything tangential, this is a pretty good read.Only complaint was that I already read "The Gift of Thanks". There was a lot of repetition between the anecdotes shared in the two books. It would have been nice to have all new material.I actually read this on a trip to Japan and left it at a hostel over there. Hope someone else enjoys it!

Need to know how to do a power calculation for a reasonably common statistical analysis and don't know what software can do it? Get this book!The author begins by briefly talking about sampling strategies and effect sizes and other important issues in determining how many subjects you need for a study. Then he provides the general information on power and goes briefly into issues for power in various common statistical methods including: differences in means and proportions, odds ratios, chi-square tests, ANOVA-ANCOVA-MANOVA (with or without repeated measures), correlation, ordinary least squares regression, logistic regression, Cox regression and many more esoteric techniques (but be warned that Bayesian methods for sample size in clinical trials are not covered). This material is presented with very little algebra so if you want to study the math look elsewhere.Instead of the math, the author provides *excellent* references to how to do the analyses including free tools on the web, free tools provided by independents and the major software companies, shareware, as well as the expensive heavy hitter packages (SPSS, SAS, S-Plus, nQuery, etc.).There are worked examples with screen shots of the software, great notes and a awesome references. This books is superb for people who need something more than the back of an envelop guess and lays out the tools that a practicing statistician will frequently need.

Nice beginner text. Worked examples are especially helpful. The extensive use of free software allows sample size learning with minimal investment.

The books is very badly written and incoherent. It refers to equation numbers but the equations are not numbered. It seems that some parts of the sections are incomplete. Keeps referring to other books instead of briefly explaining the the subject. Overall I did not find the book a useful guide for determining sample size, as it claims to be.

Solomon Solomon wrote a terrific book, full of information and instruction on painting and drawing. This edition, though, is terrible. My copy had blank pages, the illustrations were half missing or completely gone, and the page numbers didn't correlate. Though I prefer a book for reference, I ended up getting the digital version just to see the illustrations. Anyone interested in this book should skip the print version and get it online. I give two stars just because of the content of the book, otherwise the book itself deserves only one.

I bought this book after reading about it on James Gurney's art blog. The book is excellent! I own both Harold Speed's books on drawing and painting, and Solomon's Practice of Oil Painting is a wonderful addition to my small art library.The problem with painting reproductions, as described by another reviewer, has been solved. I own the latest 2012 paperback edition with an introduction by James Gurney. Not only does this book have all the black and white images which were present in the original and are reproduced here in very high quality, it also has a full set of high fidelity classical painting reproductions in the middle of the book.The prints are done in full color on glossy paper and quality of the color inserts is good enough for scanning and doing master copies.I am very happy that this book has been made available and, with so much attention to quality and detail, I'm sure it will soon reach the must-own classic status which it so richly deserves. Thanks to the good people of Dover Publications, I now own this wonderful manual which was all but lost until recently.

I found there were good reminders regarding drawing the figure, such as basic proportions, remembering to consider negative space as much as positive shapes, etc. There is a lot of classic and basic instruction for beginning and intermediate artists. I would not call it inspiring or exciting, but it is a collection of rudimentary and essential tools.

'The Practice of Oil Painting and Drawing' by S.J.Solomon is another in the genre of books which strive to elucidate how the old Masters arrived at their station and status, and what one should do to put yourself on the same artistic path.It runs the same course as most of the others like it and can be summed up by this excerpt from the book:'However imaginative or otherwise gifted the painter may be, he has first of all to be a painter, a sound craftsman. The knowledge of his medium of expression and its capacities are his first essential requirement; without it he is dumb--dumb as a thinker who is incapable of properly reducing his thoughts to words.'An interesting facet to Solomon's formal education is his education at the Royal Academy, which education he then declared virtually valueless, as the 'R.A. [Royal Academy] had 'little or nothing to teach; its students, as soon as they have passed the curriculum it imposes on them then make haste to betake themselves to France to learn, not only how to paint and draw, but to forget as much as they can of the practice and theory acquired at its schools.'' This is the exact same position the R.A. found itself early on in the 19th century, and here it is still floundering, still uncorrected circa 1885. (See 'American Painters on Technique, The Colonial Period to 1860,' by Lance Mayer and Gay Myers, giving an interesting historical perspective on the R.A. and the plight of students.)Solomon obviously still adheres to some of the old beliefs propounded earlier in the 19th century by teachers and Masters in the R.A., such as the use of asphaltum by Titian to achieve the beautiful 'toning' of his canvasses, and declaring the French school after Watteau, whom he declares the 'finest product of French art,' to be 'artificial and over sweet.' He mentions the Wallace collection, but only in reference to Watteau and Lancret. This seems to be a carry over from the very late 18th century to almost mid 19th century, a general despising of art engendered by the French ancien regime, particularly of leading Masters such as Francois Boucher and Fragonard. Solomon mentions the Wallace Collection, but nary a word about Boucher who figures prominently in the collection. (I have a particular fondness for Boucher and have several books re Boucher, one of the best being 'Francois Boucher, Seductive Visions,' by Jo Hedley, The Wallace Collection.)Yet, Solomon doesn't shirk his duty to exposing poor practices, even by a leading light of the R.A., such as Reynolds for his use of destructive materials such as wax in his painting. He gives an interesting anecdote (which I have read elsewhere) about a Reynolds painting warmed in the sunlight causing one of the portrait's eyes to slide down from its proper place towards the chin.This book was published in London in 1911, so I didn't have very high hopes for a spot on analysis of Master's painting techniques, given where conservation and real knowledge about such things wasn't to significantly surface until the late 1960's. However, his exposition on technique of the Masters is actually simply a critique of various paintings in the National Gallery, not really about technique, so that was a wash for me.Coming from other similar books, my favourite in this genre, still, is 'The Materials of the Artist,' by Max Doerner, professor in the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. This isn't to say that the books coming from people like Parkhurst and Solomon aren't valuable or their content lacks worth; they are grounded in sound atelier working principles and methods and are certainly worth a read. If you are reading treatises that were formulated in the 19th century and speak to the working methods and practices of even earlier Masters, then you and I are on the same page. If, however, you eschew the Masters in their preparation and careful craftsman-like qualities of earlier centuries and embrace the laissez faire conventions of the present day, then none of these books mentioned will probably be to your ilk or liking, however much I think they should be the core of any competent art curriculum.One last note: One nice thing this book did have which others did not, was the inclusion of colour photographs of the National Gallery art works under consideration, unlike some of the other books which, however good, however packed with valuable information, had photographs resembling 10th generation Xerox copies, which certainly diminishes their impact and legibility.

The book content is great. The publisher "Forgotten Books" is bad. They did a bad job with the formatting and layout, they have missing illustrations extremely relevant to the author studies. You cant learn from it when it misses essential information.

For beginners and experienced artists this is a fine source book. It's not for those who want to peruse pretty pictures, but if you're looking for information and guidance you will most likely find it here.

Famous text. Useful. Modern books rely on step by step photos, sequential states. Tjis is narrative text.
