I enjoyed reading it. However, there are some clear scientific errors in the figures and figure captions (e.g., location/name of some cities; offshore Vancouver is referred to as Northwestern Pacific, instead of northeastern; thickness of oceanic/continental crust).I have been using this book as a textbook for my class (introductory scientific English class) at a Japanese university over the past three years, but I had to clarify these errors to students every time we encounter such an error while reading together. Before clarification, I ask students if they have spot any mistakes in the figure, caption, paragraph, and so on. Toward the end of the semester, students are getting better at spotting these errors (they are earth-science major, so the content itself is easy for them but translating/understanding long English sentences correctly are the major problem for Japanese students). We do not discuss grammatical errors or get deep into the controversial topics, though, where it is difficult for undergraduate students to judge the statement is scientifically correct or factual enough.Among the scientific community, after the publication of this book, there have also been many changes regarding the scenario of how the eruption/explosion of Krakatoa and consequent pyroclastic flow/surge and tsunamis occurred in August 1883. It is even more dramatic than the book describes (even though the author appeared in BBC's (2006) documentary film `Krakatoa - the Last Days' with updated info, and some volcanologists believe that the tsunamis created by Krakatoa were so high that the seabed around Krakatoa was exposed to the atmosphere:[...]Others believe that the colorful sky in the painting "the Scream" by Edvard Munch (1893) reflects his observation of extraordinarily red and orange sky at sunset caused by the fine volcanic ash and aerosol brought to the air by the Krakatoa's 1883 eruption.I do hope Simon Winchester will write and publish an updated version of Krakatoa with these new discoveries as well as citations of similar volcanic disasters with vivid graphic descriptions which the author is exquisite at.

It’s also a book that suddenly clicks all the interconnected web of events proceeding the explosion, as some kind of cause-and-effect, like how the explosion triggerred the eventual independence movement in Indonesia. Fascinating book.

There are some amazing passages to this book, and it highlights aspects of the eruption -- or history around the eruption -- that most readers never would have imagined. Unfortunately, the author wanted to share so much information that it distracts from the story. Footnotes provide interesting information that is at best tangential to the subject, so for a reader trying to learn about Krakatoa, it feels like one is constantly turning off the path, admiring something quite unrelated, and only with difficulty finding the path again.

The story of Krakatoa fascinates us over 130 after its eruption and does so for good reason. Volcanoes and earthquakes are potent reminders of how little influence we truly have in the face of the forces that govern our home planet. If a volcano decides to erupt, all any of us can do is to get the hell away as quickly as possible. Besides that, their effects are quite wide ranging. I was over 1,000 miles away from Mount St. Helens but it's ash pitted the finish of a new car I had bought scarcely two weeks before. Compared to Krakatoa, Mount St. Helens was a firecracker.Winchester's book covers the history of the region, especially as a Dutch colony and gives a good working description of plate tectonics and the history of that discovery. As a technophile I found that quite interesting. Overall, the book is good, but I won't say perfect. At times it seemed to be a bit slow paced and there were a few times I wondered why the author had chosen to spend so much effort on points that probably needed little coverage. Overall, nonetheless, it was an interesting read

Martin Ravallion holds the inaugural Edmond D. Villani Chair of Economics at Georgetown University, prior to which he was the Director of the World Bank's research department. Dr. Andrew Pytel received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, his M.S. in Engineering Mechanics, and his Ph.D in Engineering Mechanics from The Pennsylvania State University. In addition to his career at Penn State University, Dr. Pytel served as an Assistant Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and as an Assistant Professor at Northeastern University in Boston. He became a full Professor at The Penn State University in 1984 and a Professor Emeritus in 1995. Throughout his career, Dr. Pytel has taught numerous courses and received many honors and awards. He has participated extensively with the American Society for Engineering Education and was named a Fellow of the ASEE in 2008.

Who can resist Beatrix Potter with her soft water color illustrations and adventurous but life-lesson stories? This book appears to be about a 10 minute read, but may take longer if your little one wants to study the delightful illustrations. It measures 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" so it is perfect for little hands to hold, or to stuff in your purse. It is a hard-covered book. I am excited to give this book along with Gund's stuffed Benjamin Bunny to my 1 year old grand daughter!

Another Beatrice Potter book that is so cute for a little three year old. Good old classic story by a great author

My son thoroughly enjoys this series. "The Tale of Benjamin Bunny" is a particularly good story to read after the child becomes familiar with "The Tale of Peter Rabbit," which sets up this story of Benjamin Bunny and Peter Rabbit's visit to Mr. McGreggor's garden. The story itself is told in the same charming prose, using appropriate words that many of today's readers tend to avoid because they appear "too difficult." The series published by Frederick Warne, in particular, had the vision to size the book perfectly for small hands, allowing even the youngest "readers" to enjoy the story, whether it is read, or whether one studies the many delightful, detailed images that fit the text so well. I highly recommend this book, as well as the rest of the Beatrix Potter series published by Frederick Warne.

I read this book back in the 80's and still remember its concepts. One of the ideas that stood out to me is that you don't have to be what you have been told you are or even what you think you are. We have many choices but they have been limited by focusing on one way of being. This usually starts in childhood when parents see us one way and the image grows until we believe that's what we are. The book has some great techniques to get you moving if you feel you're stuck in the same old pattern. The authors speak in a very honest, forthright manner and their words seem to jump from the page. This book gets you in touch with feelings and gets you moving. Highly recommend.

This book is, SO IN YOUR FACE, that if you don't do anything differently after reading it, maybe you should consider that you don't really want to change and that you are content with where you are. I realized that I was overwhelming myself taking leaps instead of hops. A little at a time is all it takes to make progress. I really enjoyed it.

My second "read" by these authors -- and it's just amazing! By NOT beating around the bush, by NOT accepting "poor me" excuses...the advice here about loving oneself and making whatever changes are needed....by TRYING different behaviors....is spot on! I wishevery psychiatrist in the country would read it -- especially the chapter about over-drugging Americans, in general! A valuable book!!

IF YOU EVER WANT TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE READ THIS...AND REREAD IT. FOLLOW IT ALONG. I USED IT IN MY PRACTICE. WANT TO CHANGE IS THE KEY.

EXCELLENT book. A great insight into the human mind, left and right side brain and how it effects a person. I give this a high rating because it really does leave you with insight.

If you are a railway enthusiast then this is the book for you - full of all the interesting details that make railways so fascinating to begin with, without ever losing significant there impact on society and history .

Excellent and absorbing social history, well worth the many pages !

At my age (84+); and growing-up as the only son of a Railway father in the U K before, during and after WW II, I can fully resonate with all that the Author says & writes on the railways scene 'back home'.The depth of research evidenced by his account -- even to including mention of places in East Anglia over which my Father held "Civil" sway all his life, brought back memories of the 'Glory days' when travel across the surface of the land while someone else up-front was responsible for the safe transit through beloved Britain, was as enjoyable a part of the overall objective of the trip, as were the events that unfolded after arrival -- whether business or pleasure.

I know just the man for this book. It had a great review and I think he is going to really enjoy this!
