This is a wonderful book (3.5 stars) however not if one can’t handle a lengthy, depressing story for the majority of the novel. As my usual it is historical fiction during the time of WWI and the pandemic of Spanish flu. The details of this time may not be for everyone as it is pretty horrific as this flu claims thousands of lives. And the story takes place at a funeral home! But the characters are rich and the writing vivid and the story so engrossing and endearing in many ways.Each chapter comes from the first person perspective of each of the female characters...the mother Pauline, and daughters Evie, Maggie and Willa. I loved Pauline, Evie and Maggie most of all but admit I could have slapped Willa silly on more than one occasion! But remember strong dislike of a character only means the author is gifted in her storytelling! It is indifference that makes a book boring ....and I was never bored reading this from page one!

I loved reading the different perspectives of how people lived through the Spanish Flu epidemic. In modern times we have no idea what a pandemic is like and this lets us know how lucky we have been. The writer gives details realistically without being sensationalilstic about it.Centering the story in a funeral home is a perfect way to have the setting show the drama and hopelessness of the service providers during the crisis. They were at the very center of the crisis, and you felt great empathy for the characters as it affected the whole family. I loved the book.There were some places where the ancillary characters meandered around a bit but it was worth it to read.

I really enjoyed these characters and the story of the Bright family. Their love of family and strong faith in humanity was uplifting. This was such a positive book even though there were losses and sorrow suffered by many. I have enjoyed several novels by his author and this one did not disappoint me. I would highly recommend this book.

While I like the way the author writes and have enjoyed many of her other books, I had a hard time with the funeral home setting of this book. Meissner did a very good job developing the characters and brought them to a reasonable conclusion. It was interesting to learn a bit about the funeral home business and the Spanish Flu epidemic in Philadelphia in 1918 so I’m glad I read it!

This is a well written book that gives you a good idea what it was like to live through this awful time in history. When I was done reading I started looking at the history archives in a town in Pennsylvania where some of my ancestors lived and descovered they died during this time period at a young age. I'm going to make a trip there and see what else I can find out. Thank you Susan for bringing this period in time alive through your story that we might have a better appreciation and understanding of it.

What a touching book about love and loss! I love how the author, Susan Meissner, shifts the point of view to different characters, whom the readers come to know well as a result. The information about the Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918 was very interesting, especially since one of my grandmothers died of the Spanish flu that year shortly after my mother was born. There are many twists in the story keeping it interesting, and I was tickled as the book ended to learn why the title was chosen. It is an excellent book!

I liked the era the book was written about but the book overall was boring. I never knew about the magnitude of that flu epidemic so that part was interesting but the story with it was bland and typical. It needed more twists and turns. I figured out the whole story way before the end.

My first thought about selecting this novel was to learn more about the Spanish flu. Both of my parents lived thru this ordeal but never spoke of it.The author tells a delightful tale about a family who was torn by the flu yet managed to survive. I just could not put the book down. Plus it has a great ending. I’d highly recommend it!

I found this by chance from reading a blog. I'm so happy I did! We've been using Handwriting Without Tears for years. I have two kiddos with dysgraphia and this seems to be a perfect fit for them. They really like drawing, and have no idea they are working on handwriting!

Cant say enough about this. The method is genius.

I have been homeschooling for seven years now, and have been constantly thwarted about handwriting with my 7-year-old son though my older daughter has been happy with the Getty-Dubay Italic series.He didn't like the Getty-Dubay. He liked Draw, Write Now for the drawing, but not the writing. I've tried copywork and tricking him into writing letters to Santa. Basically, for a bright kid, he really hates writing.Well, then I bought this workbook. He skipped straight to the second book and regularly photocopies three pages every day to work on. He really enjoys it, because it's more about drawing and pen control than it is about writing letters. Each page has a different design he's supposed to copy or complete.Meanwhile, my younger two are diving into the first book. Even my 3-year-old is drawing circles around the big triangles, within the little triangles, and all the other fun little exercises.They don't know it's handwriting, but they like it!

This is the 5th copy of this book I have purchased. Now own the Kindle version. Anticipate this will not be my last purchase either.I keep gifting this to family & friends. It's a nearly daily reference guide.. Can think of no higher compliment than to keep coming back to purchase more. Highly recommended.

I rarely write reviews.1). This book has gone through 14 editions, yet still has obvious typos within the first few pages. Unprofessional. They could have had a high schooler proofread it before publishing to catch these obvious typos.2). The book uses Gary Young’s Young Living’s proprietary oil blends. So if you would like to attempt to use this book as a reference, you are basically handcuffed to Young Living Oils.For instance, I looked up an oil blend called SARA(tm), so that I could see what it would take to recreate the oils blends from my own, extensive, high-quality essential oils which are NOT Young Living brand. It states, “SARA™ is a blend of Geranium, Ylang Ylang, Rose, Blue Tansy, and other oils.” So at first, it looked like a proprietary, and not transparently listed blend. I then looked at the ingredients list, and it stated, “Prunus amygdalus dulcis (Sweet almond) oil, Cananga odorata†(Ylang ylang) flower oil, Pelargonium graveolens†(Geranium) flower oil, Lavandula angustifolia†(Lavender) oil, Citrus aurantium dulcis†(Orange) peel oil, Cedrus atlantica†(Cedarwood) bark oil, Callitris intratropica†(Blue cypress) wood oil, Artemisia pallens†(Davana) flower oil, Citrus hystrix†(Kaffir lime) leaf extract, Jasminum officinale** (Jasmine) oil, Rosa damascena†(Rose) flower oil, Chamomilla recutita†(Matricaria) flower oil, Tanacetum annuum†(Blue tansy) flower oil, Citrus paradisi†(Grapefruit) peel oil, Citrus reticulata†(Tangerine) peel oil, Mentha spicata†(Spearmint) leaf extract, Citrus limon†(Lemon) peel oil, Ocotea quixos†(Ocotea) leaf oil, Nymphaea lotus** (White lotus) flower extract.”So although the oils are listed, it’s a blend of 18 oils, some which are quite uncommon, and it does not offer ratios for each. Yet, on page 6, the author states, “Essential oils have been used throughout the ages for healing, and the Bible contains 188 references to them.” Apparently, in biblical times, they didn’t need Gary Young’s oils for healing.If I want to hypothesize, the author was either too lazy to research the oils and their properties used in healing emotional patterns, or is simply a shill for Young Living oils.Disappointing. She has taken an already woo topic, and made it even less credible, and more “in your face marketing.”Too bad the oil for the “anger” emotion is a Young Living Brand blend. I’ll simply return this book.

I recently attended a workshop which included this book as part of Emotional balancing with essential oil. I found the information shared by Caolyn Main relating to the points on the body very helpful also useful in releasing emotional patterns which know longer serve our life. I found the book easy to understand also useful in my professional business as an Art of Life coach /Aromatherapist.

I have an older version of this book and just wanted a newer one! Good information and a lot to take in.

I loved this book. It tells you exactly what essential oils you should use for a specific emotion you might have and I found the information accurate. I would recommend this book and have given these as gifts.

Disappointed that this is just a major advertisement for Young Living. It’s completely useless if you do not buy their oils.

A must have book for emotional healing and essential oils. I wish the author would update the muscle testing section. New information and new pictures would be lovely.

I wish I had the words to convey this better.The book is built on the premise that our world is changing rapidly, and that in order to thrive, we must change how we relate to others and to our environment, how we learn, how we are present and experience life. It is written for those readers who are open to discovering their true nature in ways which involve spirituality and working with energies--all ways which have been scientifically proven, but which also depart from the usual personal development books, career coaching books, and even life coaching books (including other books by Martha Beck). I like to collect gardening books, so this is a good one to have. Beautiful pics and so on. It is not quite as easy to navigate for seed saving as one would like to think. Really have to dig around in the book to find what you are looking for, but it's definitely a nice resource if you have the time for looking thru the entire book.

Reading this book now. i'm very impressed. Its a very rich book with a good deal of detail and quality pictures. i especially liked the species focused information. This helps not only seed management, but understanding specific plants better in the garden. Definitely a great book and great reference for my garden library.
