I'm somewhat of a self-help book addict. I was browsing Pinterest one day and stumbled upon the "konmari method" and was intrigued, so I bought this book for kindle and read it in about an hour. I always thought I was a very organized person (because everything I owned had a designated, labelled place and my house was always super clean), but after reading this book I realized I was nothing more than a skilled hoarder. I locked myself in my house for 6 straight weeks (seriously, only came out for absolute necessary obligations and appointments) and decluttered the ever-living hell out of my house. The only thing that slowed me down was waiting for every Tuesday to roll around when the big donation truck would come and haul off all my unwanted items, or waiting for every Monday for the trash collection. I probably discarded well over 100 bags of clutter in that 6 weeks and earned over $400 selling the big-ticket items via social media, which I used to make my house prettier. I also donated an entire trunk full of books, CDs, and DVDs to my local library. My home's available storage used to be completely maxed out, and now I have empty drawers everywhere! I also have no less than 40 completely empty plastic storage bins in my garage that were previously full of clutter (and the storage bins are the next thing that will be sold!). Reading this book was life-changing. While I didn't follow it to the T (I do not thank my socks for their service every day LOL), it is the best feeling in the world to look around a room and realize you love every single item in said room. I no longer feel weighed down by "stuff". I still have a few odds and ends to finish up in my house, but I'm about 90% done at this point and loving it. I never knew getting rid of things could be so addicting. I also never thought I was the kind of person who could ever throw away a photo, but by the time I got to the sentimental items category, I discarded an entire garbage can full of photos without hesitation and it felt great!

Here's what the book says: touch every item in your home and if you "love it" then keep it. If you don't get that warm and fuzzy feeling of love, throw it away. There. Now you don't have to read it. Seriously, de-cluttering and organizing can have a huge positive impact on life. But the way this book approaches the topic is so silly and juvenile that I don't understand why it's a best seller. People: use your common sense and toss the things you don't use that are cluttering up your life. Ok?

First, this book has done for me what I wanted it to do: it’s helping me get rid of junk, albeit not quite in the way the author wants me to do it, but progress is progress, right?I will say the book is somewhat repetitive and it makes the same point over and over (you have too much clutter and you’re keeping it for the wrong reasons); this might be a cold, hard, necessary teaching method to break the habit of keeping clutter, so I won’t dwell on that. On the other hand though, in areas where I wanted more detail, such as the steps she provides to actually do “decluttering”, or “tidying” as the author calls it, I found I wanted more detail. While clothing (for example) is well covered, entire categories of typical American “stuff” are left out, such as cupboards, kitchen tools, towels/linens, sporting goods, major electronic and computer gear, and the garage (and the myriad of categories of stuff found in there). There is absolutely no mention of a garage. The book, to me, is aimed heavily towards a female audience, and I’m not saying that in a sexist way. There is nothing wrong with that, it’s just a missed opportunity to be more inclusive; men have stuff too, and the vast majority (not scientifically measured, just my impression) of the examples in the book are aimed at the types of belongings women *typically* own, again please don’t take this the wrong way. Most of the client examples the author mentions are women, with perhaps only two male clients I can remember. This is only notable to the extent that many pages are spent discussing organizing purses and none spent on organizing screwdrivers. I own zero purses but lots and lots of screwdrivers (along with other tools), and they badly need organizing. But I think I’ll be able to apply the technique to my garage as well as my closet. So for any of you out there who also own screwdrivers and they are in need of organization, perhaps you’ll be in the same boat as me, wondering why your tool collection was never even mentioned.I would like the author to focus more on suggesting *donating* the items she so desperately wants us to discard. She gives good reasons for not giving your old stuff to your family, but surely there’s a better home for unwanted clothing than the trash. I’ve made it a point to donate mine. Perhaps this type of thinking will make it into the second edition.Finally, as the author is from Japan, some of the cited mystical benefits of “tidying up” may register as goofy to Americans. Thanking your belongings for a job well done, as she suggests, is a form of consideration which may not resonate. But this is a matter of personal preference and posture; it certainly can’t hurt but I feel all but the most committed American readers may find it a bit campy.In any case, I did get rid of a lot of stuff on my first round, and indeed it felt good to do so. I’ve got a long way to go, but at least the author has given me a rational framework for examining an item and deciding “should it stay or should it go”. More is going than ever before.

But the Apollo Theater in Harlem, N.Y. is a genuine legend, equal, and even superior to any music theater in the world.The Classical Revival style building at 253 West 125th street in Harlem was designed by George Keiser and built in 1913-14 as the Hurtig & Seamon's Burlesque Theater, which had a "Whites Only" policy that was rigorously enforced. By the early 1930s, the place fell into disrepair and closed. Sidney Cohen, who owned several theaters in Harlem, bought and renovated the theater, renaming it "Apollo Theater" that catered to the Black residents of the area.The "Apollo" faced stiff competition from other music halls, especially Schiffman's "Lafayette" and Brecher's "Harlem Opera House" that booked dynamic acts, such as Bill `Bogangles' Robinson and Louis Armstrong. After Cohen died, Schiffman and Brecher took over the "Apollo" and progressed from vaudeville acts to swing era big bands, comic acts, dance and variety shows.The theater became a gathering place for the neighborhood; men, women and children would flock to the Apollo, when it opened its doors at 10 AM, and some would stay all day through the night to watch the multiple shows offered. Cartoons and newsreel were usually followed by a full length feature fim. ."Where stars are born and legends are made" was no idle boast from the "Apollo". A pantheon of future stars, black and white, were launched from its stage; Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Moms Mabley, the Staple Singers, Richard Pryor, Sam Cooke, Harry James, Stan Getz, Dave Brubeck, Stevie Wonder and myriad others performed at the "Apollo". Every Monday evening `Amateur Night' was broadcast on the 12 radio stations and hopeful performers would rub the Tree of Hope stump and later be chased by the "Executioner" or `Porto Rico', if booed by the rowdy audience. Ella Fitzgerald, Thelma Carpenter and Jimi Hendrix were First Prize winners of the competition.In 1962, James Brown and the Famous Flames, recorded the first `Live at the Apollo'. I cannot express what an insightful and fully informative education I had on the Apollo Theatre! My knowledge about the famous theatre did not go past the rock and soul era of the Theatre. But, there is so much to learn on exactly how far this theatre goes back. I believe every aspect of the history is told.This theatre was where everybody who was anybody made their appearance at the Apollo. The names that are mentioned, dating back to the earliest days, covering all types of shows, jazz, big bands, gospel, blues, rock, dance, comics, and novelty acts. To many performers, it was home while also known as the "number one" theatre on the map.In the forties, the war years, where Big Band dominated and you can learn about the greats here, Charlie Parker, Earl Hines, Ink Spots, Dinah Washington, Pearl Bailey, Billie Holliday, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynonie Harris, and so many more mentioned. It is wonderful to get an idea of the entertainers, conditions, staff, buildings, mechanics, operations, etc. The later chapters focus on the Apollo struggling and "How the Apollo Got It's Groove Back".Again, I have not read a more comprehensive, thoroughly insightful, entertaining history on an iconic "home", the Apollo. Excellent synopsis of the history of a great theater. From its origins, through the depression to the '80s the theater showcased not only acts, but music. Located in Harlem, it was the theater hosting Black actors, singers, dancers before they were able to break into mainstream or white theaters. It was THE unique theater well ahead of its time and original in its format. The best and greatest white acts begged to get on stage while those growing up in Harlem called that stage "home." Worthwhile reading.

No history of American music can omit the extraordinary talent assembled at an unassuming theater in Harlem. There's Elvis, dazzled by being in the place all the performers thought of as home. This book is applied sociology, giving us an unblinking picture of race in America, a picture accompanied by the beat of incomparable music.

Patients who had it in their early lives seemed to go into a trance-like (or as Sacks sometimes called it, Parkinsonian) state and became burdens on their families. Oliver Sacks' interaction with them was typically after many years had passed, and they had been committed to the hospital where he worked. The use of L-Dopa was just beginning as a treatment for this kind of disorder, and Dr. Sacks began to experiment with it on these patients. As a result, but on a very individualistic basis, they would "awaken" from their trance, and be able to function once again as capable, intelligent and independent, even joyful, human beings. This would last for awhile, before the drug would either stop working, or have some kind of deleterious effect on the patients, all of which Dr. Sacks records in the book.One of the fascinating aspects of the story is how Sacks describes the patients' feelings about their life experience. Some are horrified that they went to sleep at, say, age ten, and woke up much older. Others are grateful they had a chance to be alive again. Some have memory of being in the vegetative state, others don't. The way their families interact with them upon their awakening is also informative and varied; some are ecstatic, others threatened, still others downright angry.When the book came out, the medical community shunned it, and it's easy to see why. Oliver Sacks (who died this year) was very vocal about the way he thought doctors came up short when dealing with patients, aka human beings. He railed against them for treating people separately from their disease, and treating a disease, e.g. cancer, like it was the same for every patient. His revolutionary thought was that individuals and their diseases have a symbiotic relationship, and to treat the disease, one must treat the individual. "Awakenings" is a classic example of how to do this, and an exhilarating, if also frightening, look into the human psyche.

But I am so thankful that I read this book & must say, even at the beginning of my thoughts & comments, that I highly recommend this work of Sacks. The man has a brilliant mind, very worthy of our appreciation.I could not have read this book, had I not read ALL of the preliminary notes which take the reader well into the book and give one such as myself a very good background before going into the case studies of these special patients.I found the book to be so much better than the movie, which I thought wonderful & which left me speechless!The "sleepy sickness" that masks itself as Parkisonism would be difficult to garner understanding from without those previously mentioned notes. Oliver Sacks is a gifted writer. His prose is often times overly medical but again, please read the notes before beginning the case studies. The beauty of his words in regards to how medicine should be practiced and how the overly technical aspects of medicine are denying the original feeling & healing that is the true basic of the medical practice have made this book a must read for all those going into the medical field. This book has little in it that I cannot find in free texts. The exposition in the book is not the easiest to follow.The author seems preoccupied with determinants, but makes an egregious error in chapter 1 problem 2, where he asserts that if (AB) is square, then det(AB) = det(BA), then asks the reader to verify a similar phenomenon for trace(AB) = trace(BA). In fact the trace equality is always the case if AB exists as square. The determinant equality needs qualifications and exists iff A and B are both square, or if both AB and BA are not invertible in the case of A being m x n and B being n x m, where m != n. Otherwise det(AB) != det(BA).Further, for a book to be about "Matrix Theory", talk about numeric stability, etc. and to not even mention the Singular Value Decomposition... is really unacceptable to me.Finally, there are no solutions to the exercises.There are much better free books out there. For instance consider reading "Linear Algebra, Theory And Applications" made freely available by the author, Kenneth Kuttler.In game theoretic terms, this book is dominated by free texts. It is quite an old text, so perhaps it was useful in a pre-internet era. I would not recommend buying this nowadays.

When I read this book, I did it to remember some concepts that I had forgotten. So, I got this book more for reference than to learn something new. I was impressed with the succinct presentation. An excellent cost / benefit ratio.

The best reference / refresher text I've found. It is written in the "old style" with concise text, proofs, and derivations. Highly recommended to grad students / researchers whose primary field is not necessarily mathematics, or those who teach undergraduate / graduate level math courses involving matrix analysis.

Franklin's Matrix Theory gives in-depth explanations of the all techniques used for linear algebra (e.g., determinants, eigenvectors). The book offers detailed proofs that an elementary linear algebra textbook would not provide. Unfortunately, the book is written in a highly abstract fashion with few numerical examples. Furthermore, the book offers a limited number of problems, with no answer keys, thus precluding its use in a classroom setting. Matrix Theory is horrible as a textbook, but could be useful as a reference guide for someone looking for specific linear algebra proofs.
