I enjoyed reading 'Legend:...' by Eric Blehm and was especially riveted during battle when Roy Benavidez was involved. Technically, I have to admit that this book is not entirely about Roy and his achievements, and is written in four parts. The first is about Roy's adolescent years and difficulties he encountered while growing up with his uncle and aunt in a small Texas town. There was a strong bond between Roy and his family as well as with his boss when he worked at the Firestone Tire Store. Part 2 tells about Roy's experience in the Army and the training he completed prior to earning his Green Beret and going to Vietnam early in the war for his 1st tour. Part 3 is pretty much dedicated to introducing all the other people that had a role in the actual battle (I was somewhat confused here and had trouble remembering all the other names of pilots and ground personnel). The story continues with the insertion of two SF teams - 9 miles inside of the border of Cambodia. Their mission was to observe the Ho Chi Minh trail and ideally hijack a Russian built truck and some prisoners. However, shortly after their insertion, they are compromised and requested immediate pick-up; usually, the chopper returns to withdraw the team but a major in the overhead C&C denied their request and ordered the team leader to continue with the mission. What they soon discovered is that they were inserted onto the fringes of a Regimental or Division sized headquarters with thousands of NVA soldiers. Under fire, the team splits into two groups and locates two probable locations to the side of the original LZ in which to defend themselves. By the time higher up approve the evacuation, both teams are in dire straits - some team members were already severely wounded or dead. The firing is so intense, choppers are unable to land and sustain severe damage. The O-2 Bird dog FA announced a special code over the radio that signals an emergency with a high probability of units on the ground being overrun. It didn't take long before jets and gunships responded and immediately targeted the never ending supply of NVA regulars. Part 4 then continues with the battle and Roy Benavidez's involvement.Choppers are crashing and crews dying in the many attempt to reach the beleaguered troops. The action Roy takes is beyond belief and readers will be awed by his calmness and determination to get everybody back to safety. The story continues to describe the rest of the battle and their eventual evacuation from the LZ. Only a few survived. Benavidez was tagged in triage and left with the other dead bodies stacked outside of the hospital because of so much damage to his body. Miraculously, he garnered enough strength and fortitude to spit at the orderly who almost finished zippering him up in a black body bag. When discovering that Roy was alive, they rushed to save his life. He spent over a year convalescing from his injuries, and remained in San Antonio to be close to his family. Afterward, he continued in active service in the Army until his eventual retirement.Roy deserved the Medal of Honor for his actions that day, however, his involvement in Cambodia was top secret, and instead, the Dept. of the Army awarded him the Distinguished Service Cross - a step below the MOH. SF soldiers were sworn to secrecy and agreed not to expose anything about their missions or locations for thirty years. The penalty for doing so is a dishonorable discharge, large fine and imprisonment.Ten years later, those who survived the battle wrote reports that detailed Roy's actions during that fateful day in hopes of reversing the decision regarding Roy's MOH, yet the Army refused to upgrade it. Others continued the effort and when an eye witness came forward - one who Roy thought perished and vice-versa, and his testimony tipped the scales. The MOH was awarded for his actions in a battle west of a town in South Vietnam and Cambodia was not inferred.This is a great read with a lot of detail of the actual events. Roy was quoted in the book, "that day was filled with heroes, all trying very hard to save this team, unfortunately, many of them did not survive the battle." The last third of the book will keep you reading until the end! RIP Roy Benavidez! The unbelievable story of an incredible man, a genuine patriot and American hero. I loved the way his grandfather taught him how to be proud of his Mexican heritage and family name while at the same time inculcating pride in his country, which his Texas ancestors fought for. His grandfather and uncle also taught him what it means to be a real man, which included helping anyone who needs help.He had a rough start in life after his father died of TB, then his mother died of TB and his stepfather wanted nothing to do with him and his brother. Thanks to his mother who contacted his uncle before she died, his uncle took him in, adding to the eight children already in the family.I can't believe I may have been undergoing training during the same time he was at Ft Bragg, N.C., and was in VN when he was, but I only recently learned about him.The fact that he did what he did, saving the lives of eight men, USSF, chopper pilots, door gunners, and VN, without getting killed is a miracle in itself. When they unloaded the choppers, they found three dead NVA he accidentally saved. (The USSF and CIDG were wearing NVA uniforms.)The sad part is how long it took to give him the Medal of Honor because the Army didn't want to admit the action took place in Cambodia when the president and politicians kept claiming no US personnel were there.A well-written book that is hard to put down when the action gets hot!

King Dork was simply "not my cup of tea." Author Frank Portman's writing is good, his character development is quite inventive, and his book is quirky and to some, it would be very unusually charming. I, on the other hand, found the protagonist totally irritating. I can see teens reading this and absolutely loving it, though. But I guess I'm just too old. In the liner notes, King Dork is called a punk rock novel. I don't know what that is. I do know that I read almost the entire novel before I figured out just when the story takes place. Maybe that's part of the punk rock angle, for the protagonist is fascinated with such an array of retro-rock music that I could not pin down just when he was living his life. His father was in high school in 1963. The protagonist was fourteen or fifteen at the telling of this story. The father had been dead for several years, but when I added the ages up, that put the kid in the 1980s, but then later his father's death was pinned to 1993. Add to my confusion the fact that the major novel being taught in the boy's school was The Catcher in the Rye. As an English teacher myself, I can state that I haven't heard of The Catcher in the Rye being taught in high school in years. So, drowned in confusion and not liking the main character, I admit I sped through the book, often skipping some of it. That being said, I should not even be reviewing it, but perhaps my "take" on this is different enough from others that it will be food for thought.

Alright Alright I do get all the strong feminist reactions to this book but really...who cares? Literature and art doesn't have to be POLITICALLY CORRECT. This is the story of a young adult who's having major issues connecting with the whole world and if y'all haven't noticed he depicts everybody around him negatively...not just the female characters. Its witty and well written thats all that matters!Are you really gonna forbid your children to read something cause it doesn't align with your own beliefs of what is ''right'' and ''wrong''? Take a few moments to ponder about it

This book didn't grab me initially as I found the narrator a bit too misanthropic and condescending at first. I am glad I stuck with it because I did come to understand his worldview more as he gave more about his background. The writing style is full of pop culture references which I generally welcome but at times they seemed to have the unintended effect of stalling what may be a very compelling mystery. I believe the next book in the series will be better if it delves deeper into the mystery and doesn't get sidetracked by style over substance. I do see great potential in the author and I hope he fulfills it in his future novels.

LOL! Which is about all I did while reading Frank Portman's KING DORK. Besides wanting to initiate Reader's Theatre and read passages aloud to my friends, family, or basically anyone within earshot. This clever parody of J.D. Salinger's CATCHER IN THE RYE is packed with enough sarcastic humor to make Mad Magazine look like Highlights for Children.Holden Caulfield, step aside for the new king in town: Tom Henderson, great American nobody, Chi-mo, Sheepie, and King Dork. His Hillmont High School life is a combination of unsuccesses--from his exploits with girls, to his wannabe band that doesn't even have a drummer and amps...or guitars, to his father killed in a hit and run (or is that just what they told everyone?), to his ground-proximity position on the social totum pole.But when his alphabetical-order friend, Sam Hellerman, drags him to this party where he meets the mysterious fake-mod Fiona (who disappears and leaves him wanting), his life spirals into a humorously-obsessed scavenger hunt for the first girl he's ever made out with. The spiral gets bigger when he finds an old copy of C.I.T.R. in a load of his Dad's old books and discovers a secret code within the pages. The Catcher Code, or something.Tom's desire to know more about his Dad, and making out with Fiona for that matter, leads him into experiences he never thought he'd have. Dead bodies, devil heads, shrinks, bloody noses, monks, a little red book, laundry receipts, the Bible, police investigations, an accidental fight, and tranquilizers. Cause without that kind of stuff, life stays sort of typical, you know?For a book that's as random as it is strategic, fresh as it is a copy, ordinary as it is hilarious, and smallscale as it is worldchanging, it won't be dethroning CATCHER IN THE RYE anytime soon. It's just a half step away from that special something a novel can do to my insides. I don't even know I can put my finger on it, besides to say that I didn't have to think. But I laughed out loud till I started to wonder if people thought I was faking it. And Tom's forever enshrined in my brain right there next to Holden. I feel weird sometimes that I read so much "Young Adult" literature at my not-so-young age! But they are often so funny and smart and poignant, that it's hard not to get pulled in. This book is no exception. I loved these super smart, quirky kids, and loved riding along on their journey to self-discovery. I had many laugh-out-loud moments, at least a few thought-provoking moments, and never ever a dull moment. That's enough to give it a hearty endorsement!

I am in my 30s and could be categorized as a literary nerd in that I adore the classics and slog through the Russians by my own volition. On occasion, I desire a dessert read. This book is candy--a truly delicious read. I laughed out loud many times, including in public places like on an airplane (yes, people did furrow their brows at me, and it was totally worth it). The events the main character experiences will remind you of all the embarrassing moments from high school with the ability to laugh, sigh, cry a little, and reflect as you relive them. Perfect vacation book. I will likely read it again. Ugh, it's hard to leave this review, because I don't feel I did this book justice. It's amazing.

Easy to play for beginners and many favorites you'll enjoy. I must be reliving my youth ! It is fun to play these songs - they are listed without standard music notation - just verses and chords over words when you change chords. Short music melody notation, then all chords needed listed up front, so you can tell what chords you need to practice before playing song. I like it, and I'm a beginner.

I have been a PP&M fan since I saw them live in concert in 1966 at Miami University in Ohio. Over the years I have learned and performed many of the songs in this book and still play them today. My only objection is that it is perhaps physically much smaller that I expected which makes it more difficult to keep open on the music stand without spring clips. Great collection but no notation is included. Chords and lyrics only in this publication.

When I buy a songbook, I expect it to have sheet music in it not just chords, if I wanted just chords I would have used a free online site to find the song. Like one of the other reviews was also shocked that it was so small. Still have all the packaging and will probably return the book, highly disappointed since it has some of their best known songs in it.

The book is smaller than I imagined. The formatting of the print is poor, in my opinion. A lot of unused white space on each page means lots of page turning when playing as there are only a few lines on each page. Lots of page turning is not what you want when playing guitar.

As a beginner, learning the guitar for fun at 64 years old, I found this book to be difficult. I enjoy their music so that is why I bought it. Limited information and very difficult cords for a beginner. A more accomplished guitarist would probably find it to their liking.

Not easy to use as book so small

This is a small size book....almost pocket size! That should have been included in the description of this product. Very hard to work with.Would have ordered a different standard size book if we had known!Very disappointed.

Thought it was going to be standard-sized music book. It's smaller than a quality paperback and a bit bigger than pocket-sized. Unless I want to break the spine, book won't stay open in order to play. Also, if you don't know the songs, this book won't help. Only gives chords above the words. Oh, well.

The author actually quotes the line of Persian poetry I've used as my review title in his book. Nonetheless, he seeks the origins of wine.Inspired by a wine made in Bethlehem from ancient varietals that he tasted while pursuing a story (he's a journalist), he returns years later seeking the origin of wine in the holy land. As he talks to experts he learns that the holy land is not likely to be the birthplace of wine. He finally visits the monastery winery where that wine from the hotel minibar in Jordan that so inspired him was made, but discovers the monks have since hired a winemaker from outside and no longer make the wine themselves; his experience from nine years earlier was now gone forever.Among other excursions he visits the Caucasus, considered the likely place of origin of wine grapes and the wine made from them. While several countries have their advocates, and we'll likely never know for sure, Georgia currently has the strongest claim. Begos explores their ancient varietals and their rediscovery of qvevri, clay amphorae without handles, as vessels for wine making. He also notes the spread of such vessels beyond Georgia. (I have California wines made in amphorae.)He further explores the role and evolution of yeast, the other key ingredient besides grapes for making wine. This includes the choice between native and commercial yeasts, a matter of disagreement among wine makers.In addition to being an exploration of the history of wine it is also an exploration of wine beyond the handful of grapes that dominate the global industry, and what we lose if we neglect them. It is interesting that publication of this book follows so closely after Godforsaken Grapes, which is also about neglected grapes. While I enjoyed them both, they are quite different books. The author of the earlier book was searching for variety, and his book is very much about himself and his quest. This book is written by a journalist, and while the author is certainly a subject in his book the focus is less on him and more on history. Which book you like better will depend on which style and focus is of more interest to you. And there is nothing wrong with liking them both.I was provided a copy for review by the publisher, but have ordered a copy of the final version for my library.

I'm generally suspicious of first person accounts masquerading as "hard" non-fiction reality. Where one expects a serious presentation of facts, figures and background, the usual substitute is a series of opinions and impressions, often of little or no provable value. And Begos is, at first, that suspect first person narrator. However, he keeps himself in the game throughout, never opting out but digging even deeper into the subject of the origins of wine and the increasingly lost diversity of wine grape varieties. He engages the right people (Patrick McGovern, José Vouillamoz and others) and combines it with ongoing real experiences backed by intelligent commentary and observation. While the book is somewhat light on the science of flavor he does pursue the search for the origins of wine, effectively dismissing the specious concept of "noble" grapes and their superiority. An excellent read for anyone who questions the past and future of what we pour into our glasses.

Well written, engaging book on the history of vines, grapes and some obscure grapes. A great supplement to an wine aficionado's collection.

As a wine connoisseur for more than twenty-six years, I thought I knew where wine originated. I was shocked by Begos’ findings and am now on the hunt for wines from that region. My wine bucket list just got bigger.If you’re a wine lover and/or love history, you’ll love this book. This is a very interesting premise for a book on wine. The author set out on a ten-year journey to discover the origins of wine with some varieties of grapes going back thousands of years. This book is part history, part science, part travelogue, part buyers list. I particularly like that the author includes "tastings" at the end of some chapters providing information on where these more obscure wines can be found in the U.S. It will be fun to try wines other than the dozen or so that are currently popular. I think this book would make a unique gift for any adventurous wine lover.
