I bought this book after reading the author's The Hardest Ride, which I consider one of the finest Westerns I've read. I was a bit disappointed in the beginning. The characters didn't really grab me, but boy! Once things start rockin', they keep rockin' the whole book. Rottman is a master writer of adventure and action. This is not superheroes, fantasy type stuff, but very plausible events faced by the characters. Rottman is also a wonderful writer of fully developed, heroic women. Having a young woman in charge (maybe by default) and come through again and to save everyone was great.
An unbelievably riveting story./book. Rottman is a master story teller and able to maintain an attention riveting pace throughout his books. I tend to get bored when reading many non fiction books. I struggle at times to finish many. Gordon Rottman is in my mind a master at being able to construct a narrative that is continually well paced and riveting.
Enjoyed the book but am a little torn about how to rate it. I like my books, unless they are supposed to be fantasy, to be believable. And while all the survival skills demonstrated in this book we're probably possible, I don't know that I was convinced that this young girl could have remained so level headed and brave to have pulled them off, at least without more fear, effort and some epic fails. But it was a pretty good book just the same.
As Gordon Rottman continues his emergence as a writer of fiction, his ability as a master story teller is increasingly evident. His latest novel, Tears of the River, amply demonstrates this talent as it chronicles the adventures of four hurricane survivors led by Karen Herber, a fifteen-year-old reluctant but courageous leader. Karen feels responsible for a six-year-old Nicaraguan girl and her badly injured aunt. To complicate matters, there is also Jay, a seventeen-year-old airhead and spoiled rich kid who begins this odyssey with a head injury which clouds his thinking. In all fairness, Jay does mature a great deal as the story progresses. Gordon does an excellent job of getting into the heads and portraying the feelings and attitudes of his characters. Tears of the River is a definite “page turner†as Karen and her charges travel toward civilization while encountering adventure and danger around almost every bend in the river.
Tears of the River is a great book. It keeps you moving right on down the river with the book characters, and shows what one can do it they have to. Also it teaches a lot of survival skills if one were to ever be stranded and had only themselves to depend on. Mr. Rottman did an excellent job.
Are you a fan of the TV show Survivor or any of the other reality based survival shows? If so, you will greatly enjoy this book. Karen is a young teenage girl who has traveled to Central America on a medical mission trip with her parents. Through a series of catastrophes, she finds herself stranded in the middle of a storm-ravaged rainforest. This well-written book explores the triumph of the human spirit over enormous odds and the ingenuity of an admirable young woman. I highly recommend this book.
First book I read by this author was of the old west and I loved it so got this one next. This is a lot different book but equally entertaining. The author has a knack for making great characters in that are faced with exciting and challenging situations. Would read most any novel by this author.
A nightmare of a mission trip, told realistically with well developed characters. This book is a page turning journey through the jungle of Nicaragua after a weather induced catastrophe. Four unlikely survivors work together to save each other. An excellent story and recommended read.
